①彼の絵が好みではないかもしれない。しかしどうあがいても、彼の絵に関心を寄せてしまうことを止めることなど出来はしない。②心揺さぶられ、捕らわれる。③彼が嘲笑の的だったことは過去のものだ。彼を擁護したり賞賛することは、もはや風変わりやへそ曲がりの象徴なんかではない。④理解しがたい部分もあるが、それさえも、彼の良い点をより完全にするために必要なものとして受け止められる。
 

【文法】
①Itは形式主語なのか状況のItなのか定説はない。that節が示す内容にmay be(かもしれない)という意味合いを付加する。thatが導く節中は、youが主語、do not likeが述語動詞、likeの目的語がhis art。
thatからhis artまでがthatが導く節の範囲。
butは(It may be that you do not like)と (you can hardly refuse)を結ぶ等位接続詞。
前置詞句 at all eventsはcan hardly refuseを修飾する。
youが主語、can hardly refuseが述語動詞、it(＝his art)が間接目的語、the tributeが直接目的語、前置詞句of your interestがtributeを修飾する。

②Heが主語、disturbs and arrestsが述語動詞。2つとも他動詞で目的語youが省略されていると考える。

③The timeが主語、has passedが述語動詞。
when he was an object of ridiculeはtimeを修飾する形容詞節。
