というニュアンス。

それを示すのが接続詞のas以下。

となる。

もう少し構造を考えてみる･･･。

この文にasを置いて
as it touches upon his character
という副詞節が出来る。これにso farを置いて
so far as it touches upon his character
になる。

so far（その程度ってどの程度？）
によって投げかけられた問いの回答が、as以下の
as it touches upon his character
によって示されるという形で情報が展開している。
so far as全体を一つの接続詞と考えれば
