①I suppose Velasquez was a better painter than El Greco, but custom stales one's admiration for him: ②the Cretan, sensual and tragic, proffers the mystery of his soul like a standing sacrifice. ③The artist, painter, poet, or musician, by his decoration, sublime or beautiful, satisfies the aesthetic sense; ④but that is akin to the sexual instinct, and shares its barbarity: ⑤he lays before you also the greater gift of himself.

【文法】
①Iが主語、supposeが述語動詞。supposeの後は従属接続詞thatの省略。
節中はVelasquezが主語、wasが述語動詞、a better painterが補語。
thatが導く名詞節は述語動詞supposeの目的語。
thanは副詞節を導く接続詞で、節中はEl Grecoが主語、後に（was a better painter）が省略されている。
butは前文（I～～El Greco）とbutの後に続くS＋Vを結ぶ等位接続詞。
