Gamers in Korea can now hire an otherwise empty 200seat cinema auditorium to play video games on the giant screen. South Korea’s largest cinema chain, CGV, came up with the idea of renting out its auditoriums to gamers after the coronavirus restrictions closed many cinemas across the country. The restrictions mean they can only open with 50% capacity, and with far fewer movies being released, gaming has brought in a new revenue stream. 

It costs around $90 for up to four people to hire a screen for two hours before 6 p.m. This rises to $135 in the evening.

CGV movie tickets cost around $12 each, so a 100seat theater half-filled for a film would bring in much larger revenues of $600. Although CGV isn’t making anywhere near as much money from the gamers, it does bring in additional income. 

According to the movie industry trade magazine Variety, global ticket sales plunged in 2020 by 71%. Korea’s CGV is not the only cinema chain letting their cinemas be booked by gamers. US group Malco Theatres allows up to 20 people to hire a screen for $100 for two hours or $150 for three. Other US chains have been allowing customers to book auditoriums for private screenings in small groups.

ーCOVID-19に対応する映画館の工夫ー

韓国のゲーマーは、200席の映画館の空席を借りて、巨大スクリーンでビデオゲームを楽しむことができます。韓国最大の映画館チェーンであるCGV社は、コロナウイルス対策で全国の映画館が閉鎖されたことを受けて、映画館の客席をゲーマーに貸し出すことを思いつきました。映画館は50％のキャパシティでしか営業できなくなりましたが、公開される映画の数が大幅に減ったことで、ゲームは新たな収入源をもたらしました。

午後6時までの2時間、最大4人でスクリーンを借りる場合、90ドルかかります。夕方は135ドルまで上がります。

CGVの映画チケットは1枚約12ドルなので、劇場の半分100席が埋まっていれば、600ドルというはるかに大きな収益が得られます。CGVはゲーマーからそれほど多くの利益を得ているわけではありませんが、追加の収入を得ています。

映画業界の業界誌『Variety』によると、2020年の世界のチケット売上は71％も急減したという。
