An athlete from Uganda who went missing last week from his pre-Olympic training camp in western Japan has been found and headed back to his home country late Wednesday, officials said.

先週、西日本で行われたオリンピック前のトレーニングキャンプで行方不明になっていたウガンダ出身のアスリートが発見され、水曜日に帰国の途についたと関係者が発表した。

The mayor of Izumisano, which hosted the training camp, said at a press conference that Julius Ssekitoleko expressed hopes of staying in Japan in the morning but was later convinced to go back to Uganda during a meeting with the head of the delegation.

合宿を受け入れた泉佐野市長の記者会見によると、ジュリアス・セキトレコは午前中は日本に残る希望を出していたが、その後、代表団長との面談でウガンダに戻るよう説得されたという。

Confirming a man found in the central prefecture of Mie on Tuesday by police was Ssekitoleko, the Ugandan Embassy in Tokyo has said, "Any issues to do with alleged absconding from the duty he had been flown to perform in Japan and related disappearance from the training camp, will be handled appropriately upon his return."

東京のウガンダ大使館は、火曜日に三重県で警察によって発見された男性がスセキトレコであることを確認し、「日本での任務遂行のために派遣された任務から逃亡したとされる問題や、トレーニングキャンプからの失踪に関連する問題は、彼の帰国後に適切に処理される」と述べた。

Ssekitoleko went missing Friday from the country's Olympic team in Izumisano, Osaka Prefecture, after leaving a note at his hotel saying he wanted to work in Japan as life in his home country was difficult, according to Izumisano officials. The city and his team had been trying to locate him with help from the police.

大阪府泉佐野市の関係者によると、セスキトーレコ選手は金曜日、大阪府泉佐野市にあるオリンピックチームのホテルに「母国での生活が困難なため、日本で仕事をしたい」というメモを残したまま行方不明になっていた。泉佐野市とチームは、警察の協力を得て彼の行方を捜した。

The 20-year-old weightlifter and his coach were due to return to Uganda this week after he missed out on securing a spot for the Tokyo Olympics, which will begin Friday amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

His disappearance ahead of the opening of the Olympics raised further questions about the safety of the global sporting event, as Tokyo and other parts of the country struggle to contain another wave of infections.

IZUMISANO, Osaka Prefecture---An athlete on Uganda’s Olympic team has gone missing here, where the team has been staying for a training camp, city officials said on July 16.

大阪府泉佐野市は7月16日、五輪代表のウガンダ選手が行方不明になったと発表した。

One of the nine Ugandan delegation members, a 20-year-old male, has been unaccounted for since about 12:30 a.m. on July 16, the last time his team members reported seeing him inside the hotel where they are staying, the officials said.

ウガンダ代表団のメンバー9名のうち、20歳の男性1名が7月16日午前12時30分頃を最後に行方不明となっており、メンバーからは宿泊先のホテル内での目撃情報が寄せられているとのことだ。

Officials have reported the case to the prefectural police, and a city-wide search is underway.

関係者が県警に通報し、市内全域で捜索が行われています。

A little after 12 p.m., officials noted the athlete hadn’t taken a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test. They then checked the athlete’s room, but he was not there.

午後12時過ぎ、関係者はこの選手がポリメラーゼ連鎖反応（PCR）検査を受けていないことに気付い他直後、選手の部屋を確認したが、選手はいなかった。

The delegation arrived at Narita International Airport on June 19, where a coach on the team tested positive and was quarantined at a designated facility.

一行は6月19日に成田国際空港に到着したが、チームのコーチが陽性反応を示し、指定された施設に隔離された。

But the rest of the team was let go and traveled by charter bus to Izumisano where they checked into a hotel in the city. They were later deemed to have been exposed to the virus.

しかし、残りのメンバーは解放され、貸切バスで泉佐野に移動し、市内のホテルにチェックインした。その後、彼らはコロナウイルスに感染したと判断された。

On June 23, an athlete on the team in their 20s tested positive for the novel coronavirus, following which the rest of team self-isolated in their hotel. All of them started training on July 7.

6月23日、チームの20代の選手から新型コロナウイルスの陽性反応が出たため、残りの選手はホテルで自己隔離した。7月7日から全員がトレーニングを開始した。

Several city officials as well as the charter bus driver were also deemed to have been in close contact with people who had the virus.

また、市の職員数名と貸切バスの運転手も、ウイルスに感染した人と密接に接触していたと考えられている。

The incidents have raised serious questions over the effectiveness of the Olympic “bubble” and the organizers’ repeated assurance that the Games would be “safe and secure.”
