    What I Want to Do - My Purpose of Study 
 
           Why people study a foreign English language? To read the English documents? To have conversations with people from overseas? No, I believe that the real reason for that is to "dialog" with others all over the world. There are very few schools in Japan today to learn English for dialog. Unfortunately, only test scores and everyday conversations are focused. Therefore, I will create an environment for studying English so as to "dialog" with other people regardless of borders.

            Currently, there are several methods that people use to learn English in Japan. First is "Rote Mnemonic English",which only focuses on improving a person’s standardized test scores in order to enter a University or College through studying an innumerable amount of enumerated vocabulary and the rules of grammar just to read English. Second is "Rational Education" which allows learners to understand the origins of English through the culture and history as well as the etymology of English. In addition, there exists "English Conversation Class" where one can learn the colloquialisms used in everyday life. However, the language that one aquires using these methods are just means to obtain information or used in daily or business situations.
 
           In my opinion, I think that learning English as the "lingua franca" is not meant for that, it is for a human's interpersonal communications.
Through back and forth with strangers by observing people, and by comprehending the world beyond our surroundings. Then, while widening one’s own sense of values not being defined by a country’s cultural and societal values, we can accept others, and through continual debate about contemporary society, I believe we will be able to step forward into global peace. In a modern world, where every person can break the language barrier fairly easily thanks to the incredible development and proliferation of electronic interpreting and translating machines, simply idly chatting or reading literature anywhere in the world can already be done sufficiently through these devices. Discussing, however, with a person directly in a dialog requires a high level of English in order to precisely communicate what one is thinking.
 
           There are two important necessities that enable such kinds of dialog. One is a basic appreciation for others' cultures, religions, and sense of values before learning a common language. In reality, the scarcity of that knowledge makes us unable to surpass rambling conversation even if we obtain sufficient fluency in English.  Next step is attaining a deeper understanding of the English language, which means to be able to put one’s cognition to words without difficulty.
 
           That's why I would like to study at the University at Albany. Through Cultural and Social Area Studies, I will gain the necessary background knowledge so I can see the world from a bird’s eye view. Also, I would like to join the program to visit an unfamiliar place where I can talk with the locals and know their thoughts in person, thereby not only acquiring book knowledge. Especially even outside of class, I will broaden my knowledge concerning the world’s various societies, cultures, and histories in the "salada bowl", the United States of America. Besides this, I desire to pursue the origin of English and Cognitive Linguistics at this university where I can study the combination of Linguistics and interdisciplinary Cognitive Science. Specifically, I will grasp the English language from the cognitive point of view,  "image" behind the word as to see the ever-changing fuzzy semantic domain of the word and sentence structures. This cognitive study would increase the efficiency of somebody learning English, help him/her realize the nuances hidden within the depths of the words, and lead to a richer lexicon.
 
          By harnessing the experience that I will acquire, I will create better learning opportunities where students can develop English proficiency allowing themselves to understand the rationale and feeling behind the words and to be able to discuss their thoughts and opinions accurately with others on a global scale.
