酒一杯にして人、酒を飲み a person takes a drink

On the first cup, a person takes a drink.
On the second cup, the drink takes a drink.
On the third cup, the drink swallows the person.

If you can't stop drinking, liquor invites liquor, and you drink endlessly.

酒一杯にして人、酒を飲み
　酒二杯にして酒、酒を飲み
　　酒三杯にして酒、人を飲む

楽しく飲んでいられるうちにやめないと、次第に酒が酒を呼ぶようになり、最後はとめどなく飲んでしまうという酔態を表した言葉。
