メキシコシティ歴史地区とは、メキシコシティーの地下に眠る古代文明の遺跡がある場所です。
メキシコシティの地下に眠る古代文明とは、何でしょうか？
それは、アステカ帝国 です！
16世紀にこの地を征服したスペイン人が、エルナン・コルテスの命令のもと、すべてを破壊したのですが、
1978年に、中南米最大の大聖堂といわれる、メキシコシティ・メトロポリタン大聖堂の地下から
偶然、アステカ帝国時代に作られた石積みが見つかったことで、
メキシコシティーは、アステカ帝国の遺構の上に建設された都市であることが分かったのです。
さらなる発掘でアステカ文明の大神殿が姿を現し、失われたアステカ帝国の文化が地上に復活することとなりました。
ソチミルコは、メキシコシティの中心部から南に約30km行ったところにある街で、
かつては、広大な湖にチナンパ（浮き畑）という独特な農耕技術を使い、
トウモロコシやカボチャなどを栽培していたということです。
それも多くが、16世紀に破壊されました。
現在は、花の栽培にチナンパの技術が採用され、小規模ながら、休日には、
花を飾った色とりどりのボートや売店を乗せた舟が行き交り、観光客や市民を楽しませてくれます。
まさに、その名の通り、「花畑のあるソチミルコ」ですね♪
「アステカの生きた遺跡」と呼ばれ、かつて水上都市だった時代を偲ばせる場所として、
メキシコシティ歴史地区とともに、1987年、世界遺産に登録されました。

It's the Aztec Empire!
In the 16th century, the Spanish conquerors who conquered this land, under the orders of Hernán Cortés, destroyed everything.
However, in 1978, by chance, stone masonry from the Aztec Empire era was discovered underground in Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral, known as the largest cathedral in Central and South America.
This revelation confirmed that Mexico City was built on the remains of the Aztec Empire.
Further excavations revealed the Great Temple of the Aztec civilization, and the lost culture of the Aztec Empire was revived on the surface.
Xochimilco is a town located about 30 kilometers south of the center of Mexico City.
It was once a city that utilized a unique agricultural technique called "chinampas" or "floating gardens" on a vast lake, cultivating crops such as corn and pumpkin. However, much of it was destroyed in the 16th century.
Nowadays, the chinampa technique is used for flower cultivation, and on holidays,
colorful boats decorated with flowers and stalls filled with goods sail through the canals, delighting tourists and locals.
Truly living up to its name, Xochimilco is a "flower field" indeed
It is called "the living remains of the Aztecs" and, along with Mexico City Historic Center,
was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1987.
