バイデンがこのまま候補者として残れば、負ける！それなら、リスクであっても（もしかしてgame changerとなってアドバンテージになるかも？）ハリスでたたかう！
これはもう民主党だけじゃなくて、米国国民全体がどう動いていくのか、ここにきて米大統領選の行方、ますます目が離せなくなりました。 (+_+)

That gap - between what we ourselves think and what we reckon - others must be thinking - may hold the power to upend a great deal of what we believe we know about American civic life.

「自分のことを自分自身がどう思うか、と、他人が自分のことをどう思っていると自分が考えているか、とのギャップが、米国市民のくらしについて自分たちが信じていることを大きく覆すパワーを秘めているかもしれない。」 (･o･;)

"People are lousy at figuring out what the group thinks"
「人は、集団が何を考えているのかを理解するのがとても下手(lousy)」

The foible plays a prominent role in efforts to undo the "shared illusion"
that Americans are hopelessly divided.

その弱点(the foible)を抱えた人たちが中心になって
「アメリカ人はどうしようもなく分裂・分断している」という「共通の幻想（イル―ジョン）」を解消しようと頑張っている。 (-_-;)

Much of what news reports, politicians, and pollsters call polarization, "learned divisiveness" -- division propagated by the assumption that it exists even where it does not.

ほとんどのニュースメディアで、政治家や調査会社が「二極化(polarization)」実はこれは、存在していないのに存在していると思い込みで普及した分断(division)という「身についてしまった分裂化（という考え方）= learned divisiveness」。

■ 二極化のメカニズム...しかし、その実態は...(?＿?)

Maybe, America has the wrong idea about polarization.
It may not be nearly the engine we thought. It's possible that what it produces, as much as anything, is noise.

二極に分裂することが危機を救ってくれる原動力（engine)なんかじゃなくて、単に騒ぎたてててる(make a noise)するものでしかない可能性がある。

Ordinary folks think Americans are much more partisan than they are. In the same study, people grossly overestimated (by 78%) the size of the most polarized group within each party　- that is, Democrats who
call themselves liberal and Republicans who call themselves conservative.

普通の人たちは、アメリカ人は、実際以上に、党派心(partisan)が強いものだと考えている。各グループ内で、民主党員はリベラルで、共和党員は保守派だ！と考えているのは多いだろうと過大評価している。

At the same time, ordinary Americans grossly underestimated (by 77%) the share of the other party who are moderate. That share is, in fact, at least half of either party.

同時に、相手グループの穏健派（moderate)の人の存在は少ないだろうとも過小評価している。

"People probably are exactly right about how polarized their leaders are.
They get it very wrong for the general public."

確かに党のリーダーたちは二極化しているというのは正しいだろうが、一般国民もそうだと思い込むような間違いをしている。(>_<)

It gets worse: the more involved in politics a person is, the more distorted their view of the other side, a survey found. In other words, engagement in civic life actually serves to narrow one's perspective on the world.

さらに厄介なことには、政治（市民生活）に関わっているほど、相手の党員に対するゆがんだ考えが強くなり、全体を見渡す視点が狭まってしまう。

■ In truth, most Americans agree on most things.
（実はほとんどのアメリカ人はほとんどのことに同意してる。）

にもかかわらず、

Our brains mistake repetition for majority opinion.
（繰り返される情報なら、多数派の意見に違いないと脳は勘違いする。）

Regular viewers do appear to be genuinely polarized. But in a 2022 study,
Fox News viewers who were paid to watch CNN registered a significant moderation in their views after just a few weeks.

いつも同じ番組を見ている視聴者は、確かに二極化しているように見える。
しかし、ある調査・実験で、（保守派の）Fox Newsの視聴者にお金を払って数週間ほど（リベラル派の）CNNを視聴させてみたところ、彼らの意見はかなり「穏健派」的に変わった。

"You change their media environment and their attitudes change pretty meaningfully."

「人が目にするメディアの内容を変えれば、その人の考え方も変わる」ということ。 (･o･;)

つまり、

"Polarization appears to be largely driven by misperceptions."
（「二極化している」という認識は、思い違いによるものであることが多い）

Informed of the actual situation, the reaction recedes.

実際の状況を知らされたなら、（お互いへの誤解による）反発はおさまっていく。(#^.^#)

★ もうこれまでで十分「分断・二極化」政治が、国内外にどれだけの不穏を生み出してしまうのかそれを思い知った人たちが、実は「分断・二極化」が嘘（イル―ジョン）で米国はいろんなことに一丸となって同意してやっていける！んだとがわかってしまえば...

来る米大統領選、もしかしてもしかするかもしれませんよ～（＾～＾）
