指示する実体の異なる代名詞

長年，英語と付き合う中で，ときどき出会っては違和感を覚えるものの，「そんなもの」として流してきた英語の用法の１つに，次のような代名詞の使い方があります。

Quora の How are college students today different from college students 20 years ago? という質問に対する回答の一部です。

Australian students are more mobile than they were 20 years ago. Although the parental home is still the most common place for Australian students to live, it is no longer unusual for students to leave home to attend university in a different city or state, and live on or near campus.

Students are more aware of their higher education options than they were 20 years ago, as universities now market themselves aggressively and information is much more accessible on the internet. 20 years ago, universities in Australia did very little marketing and while they all had internet pages, these mainly held information about the research of their academics and information for students already enrolled.

太字にした２つの文で，それぞれ they が使われています。

１文目は，Australian students are - they were

２文目は，Students are - they were

という対応関係で，

「今の（オーストラリアの）学生は…」

⇔「昔の（オーストラリアの）学生は…」

という対比の関係になっているのは自明かと思います。

私が違和感を覚えるのは，元の名詞句 Australian students が指す，この現実世界に存在する実体（オーストラリアの学生たち）と，代名詞 they が指す，この現実世界に存在した実体（２０年前のオーストラリアの学生たち）は，異なるということです。

Mike is a college student and he lives with his parents.

であれば，Mike と he は同一人物を指します。しかし，上の例では，(Australian) students と they は，明らかに別の人物（集団）です。

最初に（Australian） students を目にしたときに，頭の中で「オーストラリアの学生たち」のイメージが浮かぶのですが，次に they を見たときに，その「オーストラリアの学生たち」を思い浮かべたまま読むと，話がおかしくなってしまいます。なぜなら，「今のオーストラリアの学生たち」が２０年前に云々，という解釈になってしまうので。

もちろん，ここの they は，言葉の理屈としては何も不思議なことはなく，they = (Australian) students と元の名詞句を代入して理解すれば，「そりゃそうだ」と理解はできます。けれども，どこか無意識に，代名詞の指示対象を実体として同一視してしまい，they  = the (Australian) students と読みたくなってしまうのですね。

この事例は，現実世界の実体ではなく，あくまで言葉を指示対象として受け継ぐという代名詞の性質がよく現れる部分なのだと思います。

that も it も，日本語では「それ」と訳せますが，that は基本的に現実世界の実体を指示する直示的な用法であるのに対し，it は，実体ではなく，文脈上先行する言葉を受けるという違いが，まさにこういうことなのではないかと。

こういう違和感が残っているうちは，英語が自分の言葉になり切っていないということなのでしょうね。
