On The Samurai Sprit ／Yukio Mishima

You can easily find two contradictory characteristics of Japanese culture or Japanese characters.One is elegance, and One is brutality. but these two characteristics are very tightly combined sometimes, and then our brutality I think comes from our emotion. it is never mechanized or systematized like  Nazi's brutality.

And I think that brutality might come from our feminine aspect, and elegance comes from our nervous side. sometimes we are too sensitive about defilement, or elegance, or a sense of beauty of such an aesthetic side. and sometimes we are tired of it and we need sometime sudden explosion to make us free from it. For instance, after the war, our brutal side was completely hidden, but I believe it is just hidden, I think.

I don't like that the Japanese culture is represented only by flower arrangement or such as a sort of a peace-loving culture.
I think we still have a very strong warrior mind, you know.

武士道精神について

日本の文化、日本人の性質には矛盾する2つの特徴を見つけることができます。ひとつは優雅さ、もうひとつは残忍さです。しかし、時にこの2つの特性は非常に緊密に結びつくことがある。そして、日本人の残忍さは感情から来るものです。決してナチスのように機械化または体系化された残忍さではありません。

私が思うに、残忍さは女性的な側面から来るものであり、優雅さは我々の神経質な側面から来るものです。私たちは時に、気品や美意識といった審美的側面に対してあまりにも敏感です。そして時折、それに疲れてしまう。そういったものから解放されるために、衝動的に爆発したくなります。例えば、戦後、私たちの残忍な面は完全に影を潜めたが、それは単に隠れているだけだと思っています。

日本文化を代表するものが生け花だったり、平和友愛的な文化だけだと思われるのが私は気に入らないんです。我々の中には強烈な武士の精神が未だに存在してると思います。
