Then came Adam Smith, intent on exploding what he considered erroneous and harmful ideas. Smith’s adult life up to this point may be regarded as preparation for the monumental task to which he now set himself. A native of Scotland, he matriculated at age fourteen (1737) at the University of Glasgow. There he came under the influence of a great teacher, Francis Hutcheson, whose frequently reiterated belief in “the greatest happiness of the greatest number” became Smith’s permanent ruling philosophy. Proceeding next to Oxford University, where he remained for six years, Smith devoted most of his time to extensive reading over a wide range of literature. Upon returning to Scotland, he gave public lectures in Edinburgh until 1751, when he was appointed first to the chair of logic and metaphysics and shortly thereafter to
the chair of moral philosophy at the University of Glasgow. For twelve years he served as a gifted and popular lecturer, adding to his reputation by publication of a best seller, Theory of Moral Sentiments―a work regarded by his contemporaries as superior to the Wealth of Nations. Tempted by generous financial rewards, Smith resigned his professorship to accompany a young nobleman, as companion and tutor, on a three-year tour of the Continent. There he became acquainted with the leading economists, philosophers, and political thinkers of the time, particularly in France.
