The book is about a manlike cat wearing a tall, red-white striped hat with a red bow tie. The Cat suddenly visited Sally’s house and her brother, who was alone at home on a rainy day.

Although his appearance was not welcomed, the Cat insisted on showing off his silly tricks to cheer up the children. But he ended up turning their house into real chaos.

Luckily, the Cat created a magical machine to clean up the house from outside to inside. He finally brought everything back to the first look right before the children’s mother came home.

The Cat brought along his companions: Thing One and Thing Two in his journey. And these creatures are also the cause of the ongoing trend of wearing shirts.

The two Things are twin brothers wearing red suits with unique blue hair. They came from the red box that the Cat carried with him.

The twin was released to help the Cat in amusing the children. However, instead of helping, the mischievous Things turned out wrecking everything in their path, causing more problems for the children and the Cat.

They flew kites in the house, which finally bumped into the wall. They also destroyed the pictures on the wall. The polka-dotted dress of the children’s mother was not safe from their naughtiness as well.

To stop the Things, Sally’s brother had to use a net to capture them. After that, the Cat put the twin back to the box to prevent more damage to the house. Then, thanks to the Cat’s machine, the mess caused by the Things were gone.

Although the two Things are indeed troubles, their impact on the audience is surprisingly positive. The ridiculous things that they did make people laugh. And the love they gave for each other made people impressed.

No matter what they do, the Things are always together. They share the same look, the same personality, and the same mind. And that’s exactly what friends are for!

Soon, Thing One and Thing Two became the symbol of a super-close relationship hilariously. They also created a phenomenon all over the world. Inspired by these two characters from The Cat in the Hat, the trend in real life occurred.

At first, there was no Drunk 1 or Drunk 2 on Earth. The beginning form of the trend was Thing 1 and Thing 2, which directly imitates the two Things in the book.

To represent the twin, people started to print these names on their shirts. Best friends wear them. Lovers wear them. Families also wear them.

And if you need more help, Thing 3 and Thing 4 will lend a hand. The number on the shirts increased to 3, 4, or 5, depending on the number of people in the group.

Later on, this practice has gained significant popularity and become a worldwide trend. Along with that is the appearance of various parody forms.

For more fun, the word “Thing” was replaced by another hilarious one, such as “Sexy”. Besides, many diverse versions of the shirts also show up in the market. You can see some of them in the picture below.
