彼に推しを撮ってほしい。推しを撮った写真はあるかな
ロイヤルバレエ団プリンシパルダンサーのマリアネラ・ヌニェス。2017年に編集の仕事で撮影した写真。ネラは感情的な質感が重く最も魅力的なダンサーの一人。彼女の感動的な演技は完璧な技術に裏付けされているので常に写真に撮った凍り付いたような一瞬には不可能に見える。しかしながら、彼女の優美な3次元の姿を平面に写し取ろうとした。彼女の完璧なラインの優美さと純潔を表し、彼女の動きの美しさの一面を明らかにした。彼女は動きの中にある詩のようだ。
‘Marianela Nuñez, Principal Dancer of The Royal Ballet. This was photographed in 2017 for an editorial commission. Nela is an emotional heavy weight and is the most compelling of dancers. Her emotive performances are underpinned with perfect technique and so always looks incredible in the frozen moment of a photograph; this however was an attempt to show her exquisite three dimensional form on the flat page, to show the grace and purity of her sweeping lines and to reveal another facet of the beauty of her movement. She is pure poetry in motion’
ロイヤルバレエ団プリンシパルダンサーのエドワード・ワトソン。舞台裏を取り始めた頃の最初の方の写真の一つ。彼の象徴的な役であるマイヤリングの幕が上がる30分前の写真。この頃通常プリンシパルダンサーは舞台に最初にやってきてほかの役がやってくるまえに数分間集中する時間を取っていた。エドは私のスタジオでよく撮影していたのでよく知っていたけれど、楽屋から舞台へ、ゆっくりとプリンス・ルドルフになっていく過程は驚きだった。演技とか芝居ではなく、彼は単に他の誰かになっていった。
‘This is Edward Watson, Principal Dancer of The Royal Ballet. This is one of the first photographs I ever took backstage and is in the half hour before the curtain went up on Mayerling, a signature role for him. In that time the Principal dancers usually arrive on the stage first and have a few quiet minutes to focus before the whole cast arrives. I knew Ed very well at this point having photographed him in my studio many times, but to watch him go from his dressing room to the stage and in that journey slowly became Prince Rudolf was astonishing. It wasn't an act or a performance, he simply became someone else’

Her ability to show stillness at such an extreme moment of physicality is just amazing to me’
「その下にあるもの」シリーズから特に気に入っている写真のうちの一枚。2013年のニーマイヤとユフィ・キッシュ、彼らが結婚する前に撮影した。このときがカップルであるダンサーを撮影するのは初めてだった。このときニーマイヤはケガをしていてここにいるはずではなかったのだが、とにかく彼はやってきて、ふたりのお互いにサポートする姿と精神の強さと同じく弱さも見せようとする気持ちに動かされた。二人は舞台上でもそれ以外でも刺激を与え続けているカップルだ。
‘One of my favourite portraits from the ‘What Lies Beneath’ series and its accompanying book, Nehemiah and Yuhui Kish, taken in 2013 before they were married. This was the first time I had photographed dancers who were also a couple. Nehemiah was injured at the time and shouldn’t really have been there, but he came along anyway and I was incredibly touched by their support for each other and their willingness to offer up to me their vulnerabilities as well as their spirit. They remain an inspiring couple both on and off stage’
ロイヤルバレエ団プリンシパルダンサーのヤスミン・ナグティとソリストのトリスタン・ダイヤー。クリストファー・ウィールドンのウィズインザゴールデンアワーの幕が上がる数分前。ダンサーたちは決して私を驚かせることをやめることはない。細かい部分への集中、フォームの完璧さへの探求、完全に役に身を任せること。私が撮影するときに心がけているのは、彼らの演技がなんてことなしにやっているように見えるように彼らが注ぐ献身、義務、肉体的能力を露わにしながら、彼らの演技の邪魔をしないこと、彼らの芸術性へのより多くの理解を引き出すことだ。
‘This is Yasmine Naghdi, Principal of The Royal Ballet and Tristan Dyer, Soloist of The Royal Ballet, seen here in the minutes before curtain up for Christopher Wheeldon’s Within the Golden Hour. The dancers never cease to amaze me; the absolute focus on detail, the quest for perfection of form, the complete surrender to role. In doing what I do, my intention is not to undermine their performance, but rather to encourage a greater appreciation of their art, by showing the dedication, commitment and physical prowess that makes those performances appear effortless’
