Rick Guest is one of the leading dance photographers of his generation

Here are some of his favourite images he's captured of The Royal Ballet over the years...

'A completely unretouched raw shot from a studio session with the incredible Frankie Hayward, Principal Dancer of The Royal Ballet, for the series and accompanying book ‘The Language of the Soul’. There really doesn’t need to be any accompanying text as she completely embodies the title'

Photography by Rick Guest, with Olivia Pomp
‘This is a portrait of Wayne McGregor, Resident Choreographer of The Royal Ballet and Edward Watson, Principal of The Royal Ballet. This was a portrait that hoped to show the intertwined relationship of choreographer and dancer, as well as trying to reveal something of the incredible intimacy and trust between these two men that has led to so much amazing work’

‘This is Marcelino Sambé, Principal Dancer of The Royal Ballet, photographed here as the Cello in Cathy Marston’s The Cellist, with Matthew Ball and Lauren Cuthbertson in the background. Marcelino is the personification of dance itself; he sweeps audiences away with his joy, his commitment to his roles, his quicksilver physicality and his powerful emotional resonance. He is the best of men, both on stage and off’

‘To my mind the greatest Corps de ballet in the world, seen here in Swan lake. The epitome of elegance and grace, they make it look effortless, but the marks carved into the stage of The Royal Opera House tell a different story. I’m constantly amazed at the dedication and mutual trust of this incredible family of dancers’

‘This is Melissa Hamilton and Eric Underwood, both Soloists of The Royal Ballet at the time. Having focused so entirely on portraits around that time, I had decided to try something that was purely about the physical form, something more sculptural. What I had completely underestimated was that a dancer's physicality is their signature and they are as recognisable to me like this as a headshot portrait would be. Sometimes when you don’t end up where you wanted to go, you end up where you should have been all along’

‘This photograph was part of the series and accompanying book entitled ‘What Lies Beneath’, my attempt to reveal how a life sacrificed on the altar of their art is literally carved into the dancer’s body. This arm belongs to Edward Watson, Principal Dancer of The Royal Ballet. For me it sums up the grace and strength required to be a dancer, but also the emotional expression through gesture that it takes to be a great dancer. On his shoulder is the fine line of a scar, where just at the end of a performance his bicep detached from his shoulder to become a knot of muscle at the crease of his elbow; he was back rehearsing within 3 weeks…’

‘This is the inimitable Gary Avis, Senior Ballet Master and Principal Character Artist of The Royal Ballet. Seen here in the role of Koschei in Firebird as he leaves the stage after rapturous applause, it’s just one of the myriad of character roles he now plays. These are the pivotal characters around which these fairytale story lines turn and the depth he gives each and every one is truly astonishing’
