What Is Coming Out All About?
2-1 As you learn more about the LGBTQ community, you’ll find that coming out is a very meaningful issue. 2-2 Some people will ask you if you’re out or who you’re out to. 2-3 They might want to share their coming-out stories. 2-4 Sometimes it seems like everyone who is queer is obsessed with the idea of being out. 2-5 A popular LGBTQ magazine is called Out, and there’s even a National Coming Out Day.
2-6 Coming out is the process of telling others that you’re queer. 2-7 The phrase “coming out” comes from the metaphor that you’re “coming out of the closet.” 2-8 Conversely, people who are not out often are referred to as being “closeted,” meaning they’ve chosen not to tell others of their LGBTQ identities.
2-9 There’s a whole range of being out. 2-10 People can be completely out, meaning they’re open with everyone about being LGBTQ. 2-11 Some are partially out, meaning they’re out to some people but not everyone. 2-12 Others might only be out to one very close person in their lives. 2-13 Some people aren’t out at all.
2-14 Coming out has its pluses and minuses. 2-15 It can open up your social life to other LGBTQ teens and allow you to live freely without having to hide who you are. 2-16 But it can also cause stress in your family and put a strain on some of your friendships. 2-17 For most LGBTQ people, coming out is a major milestone and a life-changing experience. 2-18 It’s like taking off a mask and letting people see who you really are. 2-19 Some people decide to come out because they’re tired of hiding who they are. 2-20 These people are willing to risk telling others in exchange for the freedom of living openly. 【和訳】カミングアウトとは一体どういうことなのか？
2-1LGBTQ界隈について知ることが多くなるにつれて気付くことだが、カミングアウトというのは非常に重要な問題だ。2-2カミングアウトしているのか、あるいは誰に対してそうしているのかを訊ねてくる人もいるはずだ。2-3そういう人は自分も同じようにカミングアウトの話をしたいのかもしれない。2-4性的マイノリティの人が誰でも、カミングアウト状態でいるべきだという考えに取り憑かれているように思えることもあるかもしれない。2-5評判の良いLGBTQ雑誌のタイトルはOutであるし、カミングアウトデーというものまである。
2-6カミングアウトというのは他者に自分が性的マイノリティだと話す過程である。2-7カミングアウトという表現のもとになっているのは、「私的空間から出てくる」というメタファーだ。2-8逆に、カミングアウトしていない人々は「籠もっている」と言われることが多いが、これはその人が自分で決めて、他者に自分がLGBTQだという自認の話をしていないということだ。
