　　　長島町温州みかんの歴史について紹介します
温州みかんは、約500年前中国から伝わったみかんの種子の偶発実生と言われております。伝えたのは、当時黄岩県に留学していた天台宗の僧ではないかと 言われています。江戸時代末に長崎に来たドイツ人医者シーボルトが温州みかんの錯葉を作り、これにNagashimaと記していました。これは長島が温州みかん発祥の地であることの証拠となりました。温州みかんの名は中国の温州府に由来しています。温州府はみかんの産地として名高かったことからそのみかんのように素晴らしいというのが温州みかん命名の由来と言われています。
