Writing is the hardest thing.
I’ve been thinking about this lately. To be honest, my English ability has improved a lot these days in part because I use it everyday when I write code. Every time I face an error, I have to ask Google what this error is. That means I have to read a lot of English documents. That enhances my reading ability. In addition to that, YouTube. I mean, YouTube is now a valid tool to collect useful information. Even if you are a skillful developer, you can find very informative and useful resources on YouTube. And that improves my listening ability. Then what’s left? Yes, Speaking and writing.
I think these are the hardest ones to practice. Essentially almost all non-native speakers are struggling with this problem. And I think writing is the hardest. Why? Because Writing is not only to be familiar with the language, but you have to know a tiny little detail and connotation of it. What does that mean? Well, basically you can’t get the ability without solid training. You can’t.
When you speak, the voice will disappear. But when you write, your sentences remain. That’s the only difference and that matters a lot (you can say speaking and writing use totally different muscles and that’s true). You can’t cheat on writing. Your great pronunciation and amazing gestures don’t make you look beautiful and smart here. You have to fight only with your choices of words and structure of sentences. It is hard, isn’t it? At least for me, It is so hard and exhausting that I want to go to bed now. Wish I could keep doing this.
My motivation here is just simple. I want to be a man who can writes things well in English (in Japanese as well, of course). Nowadays I feel like I have to prepare this kind of skill beforehand. Wait, before what? I don’t know but...
