Takaaki Sano's Life Journey
Takaaki Sano was born in 1982 in Adachi-ku, Tokyo. He grew up in a typical household, but at the age of 13, he became a shut-in and spent approximately seven years living in isolation. During this period, he faced significant emotional pain and loneliness, grappling with various inner conflicts.
At the age of 16, his mental health deteriorated, leading to a forced hospitalization in a closed ward. During this time, he experienced severe side effects from medication, resulting in loss of consciousness. The landscapes and emotions he perceived during these moments had a profound impact on his future work. After being released from the hospital, he met manga artist Shinichi Ishizuka, who is known for his works "Gaku" and "BLUE GIANT." Under Ishizuka's guidance, Sano learned the importance of self-expression.
Following this, Sano pursued higher education at a university in the United States, where he studied liberal arts. The perspectives and values he developed during his college years continued to influence his life and artistic endeavors. After graduating, he began working as a teacher, but he always felt a strong desire for creative expression.
In 2014, reflecting on his past, he uploaded photographs of sunsets he had taken during his shut-in period to Tumblr. One of these photos caught the eye of London-based singer-songwriter Grimm Grimm, who used it as the cover for an album. This marked the beginning of Sano's career as a photographer.
In 2015, while working as a science instructor at the Shanghai Japanese School, Sano held his first photography exhibition, "Takaaki Sano Photography Exhibition: Light," which garnered attention from young people in Shanghai. His self-published photo book "Hikari" sold out, further establishing his name.
After returning to Japan, Sano continued to hold annual solo exhibitions, particularly gaining recognition for a 2017 exhibition under the elevated tracks of Kita-Senju Station, where he expressed his life experiences through his photography.
In 2021, he received the Amana IMA Next "MEMORIES" Award, further enhancing his international presence. In 2023, he co-hosted an exhibition titled "Imozuru-shiki" with photographer Ikushun, inviting Grimm Grimm as a guest artist. His works evolved by integrating music and other forms of art, continually pushing the boundaries of his creativity.
Sano has built a diverse network, interacting with various artists such as Kayo Ume, a renowned Japanese photographer known for winning "Kimura Ihei Commemorative Photography Award" in 2005, Shusuke Fukutoku from JARUJARU, a talented Japanese comedian known for his unique sense of humor, Shinichi Ishizuka, and Grimm Grimm. He embodies the belief that "all life is connected," using his art to convey messages to society and individuals.
His life is a tapestry of struggles and joys, solitude and connection, enriching his work and resonating deeply with viewers. Takaaki Sano is set to continue his journey of artistic exploration, seeking new expressions and experiences along the way.
