According to a study published by the CDC on July 30 nearly 400 children between the ages of 12-17 suffered heart inflammation after receiving the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine.
The heart condition is also known as myocarditis and was mainly seen in young boys. During safety trials of the vaccine the condition was not identified.

The study was conducted based off of reports made to the Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (VAERS) between December 14, 2020 to July 16, 2021.
8.9 million children have received the vaccine as of July 16. There was a total of 9,246 adverse reactions reported to VAERS and 90.7 percent of those reports were considered, “nonserious adverse events.” The 397 reports of heart inflammation made up 4.3 percent of the adverse reactions that were reported.
According to the study 14 children died after receiving the vaccine. Two died of intracranial hemorrhage, two died of pulmonary embolism, one died of heart failure , one died of a rare blood condition and two committed suicide. The death of the other 6 children is unknown.

Hause did report that there were limitations to the study because. “VAERS is a passive surveillance system and is subject to underreporting and reporting biases.”
The CDC conducted a risk-benefit assessment based off the adverse reactions reported and decided to still recommend the Pfizer vaccine to children 12 and older despite the incidents of heart inflammation.
