英文を解釈する①

In the Burns case, police were responding to a loud argument at the apartment where Burns’ girlfriend was staying. Officers said they forced their way into the house after Burns insisted they weren’t needed. Lisa Burns, who was 3 years old, was in the room when her father died.

“Lisa said, and she doesn’t remember this [today],‘They killed my daddy. They killed my daddy,’” Keli Burns recalls. Before the funeral, she says she learned that two of Burns’ teeth had been knocked out and bones in his neck broken.

これの意味分かりますか？

文脈は、George Floydさんが2020年にMinneapolisの警察官の厳しい拘束により窒息死した出来事と、よく似た被害が2002年にもMinneapolisで起きていたことを告発する、被害者の娘さんを特集した記事です。

Burns はいわゆるfamily nameなので、奥さんの名前はKeli Burns,娘さんの名前はLisa Burns, 亡くなった父の名前がChristopher Burnsです。

上記の文は、Christopherさんが亡くなった日の出来事についての描写です。

Burns氏が亡くなったケースでは、警察がBurnsさんの恋人が滞在していたアパートでの激しい口論。対処していた。

・police は集合名詞なのでwere

・argumentは可算名詞で使えるので　a (loud) argument

・関係副詞のwhere

などが重要な文法ですね。

つづいて

Officers said they forced their way into the house after Burns insisted they weren’t needed.

これがややこしい。

theyが指すものが、「警察官」なのか、「BurnsさんとBurnsさんのgirl friend」なのかを、しっかりと文脈で判断しないといけないです。

一つ目のtheyは、後ろの動詞がforce their way into the house「家に押し行った」なので、警察官の動作だと分かりますね。よってthey = police／officers です。

そして

after Burns insisted they weren’t needed.

このtheyも同じですね。

Burnsさんは警察官に対して、警察は必要ないことだと主張していましたが、警察は入っていったわけですね。

そのあとの文

娘のLisaさん(当時3歳)は、父が亡くなった現場にいた。

辛いですねーー、喧嘩を見るのも亡くなる現場を見てしまうのも。

“Lisa said, and she doesn’t remember this [today],‘They killed my daddy. They killed my daddy,’” Keli Burns recalls.

Keli(母)は思い出しながらこう語ります。
「Lisaは、今は覚えていないけど、当時『あいつらが私のパパをころしたんだ。あいつらが私のパパをころしたんだ』って言ってました。」

娘さんも母も代名詞はsheですし、クォーテーションの中にクォーテーションがありますが状況を把握しましょう。

葬式の前に、KeliはChristopherの歯が2本欠けていて、さらに首の骨が数本折れていたことを知ったと言います。

間接話法ですがしっかりと代名詞を追いかけましょう。

また、この事件は20年近く前の話なので、Before the funeral, she says…と書かれていますが、「発言は葬式より後にしている」ことを確認してください。

語順を変えて直接話法にすると、

She says( said)” Before the funeral, I learned that two of Burns’ teeth had been knocked out and bones in his neck broken”.

ということです。
