Interview (English version) | Johnnivan
Johnnivan is an indie band with a
compelling live performance and
musical style like no other. What are the
thoughts behind their long-awaited 2nd
album, and how are they inspired to
perform and create their music?
*This is an English translation of a live
interview originally done in Japanese.
【Taking what we find cool into
our music】
Would you please introduce yourself
to our readers?
🟩Shogo: We are Johnnivan.
We are based in Tokyo.
During college, we all ran in similar
musical circles, and Johnathan (Vo)and I
started making music together in 2017
and then welcomed all the other
members of the band in 2018.
I hear that you all came from slightly
different musical backgrounds. What led
you to start making music together in your
current style?
🟩Shogo: At first, the songs that
Johnathan wrote and the songs that I
wrote were pretty different from each
other. But instead of worrying about the
genre so much, in the end, we decided
to mix what sounded cool at the time
and make it our own. It wasn't like we
sat down and specifically decided to do
so, but looking back, that's what seemed
to happen.
⬛️Johnathan: I won’t dispute that.
*Everyone chuckles*
We have an image that each of you
listens to a wide variety of music,
whether it's going back to personal
influences or using playlists for inspiration
for your own creation.
Do you have any artists that you are
inspired by or paying attention to?
🟩Shogo and Yusaku in unison: The1975...
*Everyone laughs*
🟩Shogo: They just put out a new song
didn't they?
🟥Junsoo: I feel like we all like The1975.
🟧Yusaku: You're right we do all listen
to them.
🟥Junsoo: It's one of the few bands
that everyone likes.
When Phoenix played “Lisztomania”
tonight right before your live performance
everyone seemed pretty entertained.
🟩Shogo: Yeah, we do love Phoenix.
🟧Yusaku: There's also LCD Soundsystem.
🟩Shogo: A lot of these are pretty
obvious as our influences. Do we wanna
share our individual favorites?
⬛️Johnathan: I like Rosalía from Spain
a lot.
🟦Kento: I’ve been listening to
Toro y Moi's new song “MAHAL” over
and over.
It is so good isn't it? I just bought the album.
🟥Junsoo: I’ve been getting into
Wet Leg lately. They actually performed
at Glastonbury the other day.
🟩Shogo: They're definitely hot right
now.
🟧Yusaku: I’ve been listening to
Kendrick Lamar's “To Pimp A Butterfly”
on repeat since it came out.
🟩Shogo: I also like Japanese breakfast right now.
【Our standard is a just question
of whether both we and the
audience can enjoy the show】
You've consistently updated your live performances since 2019. Please tell us about
your commitment to performance and how
you approach live shows.
🟧Yusaku: As the drummer, I'm behind
the frontman, but I’m also the most
energetic and loudest. I try to be the
energy for the whole band with my
performance.
🟦Kento: We try to make the music
simpler than the CD recordings so
people in the audience can really get
into it.
🟥Junsoo: This is kind of vague, but
since people pay to come and see us,
I really want to make everybody
satisfied through our performance as
musicians.
🟩Shogo: I think we all try to respect
the audience.
⬛️Johnathan: For me personally, I try
to make live performances a little wilder
than the recordings. I really want people
to feel that all five of us are there
performing for them.
In a previous interview you said that it's
not enough for your concert just to be
energetic and to have a good vibe.
From my perspective, your performances
feel more meticulous rather than improvised.
🟥Junsoo: Yes, we rarely improvise.
🟩Shogo: It’s not that we don’t at all,
but first we have to feel good about
what we're going to do. As we think
about our set list, we always try to consider
how we can keep the audience engaged
throughout the entire show. With that in
mind, we make sure there's an ebb and
flow of the level of energy.
🟥Junsoo: Our standard is a just
question of whether both we and
the audience can enjoy the show.
🟩Shogo: Through lots of trial-and-error,
we constantly try to incorporate new
elements into the show, which might be
why you’ve felt that we are always
updating our performance.
Comparing the 2018 to the 2019 version
of “Nobody’s Awake in This House”,
there's a pretty big change from
the original. The same can be felt listening
to your live arrangement. Do you have a
process of always updating past and
existing songs?
🟩Shogo: Yes, but it's mostly done
unconsciously. One thing is that these two
versions are different because
the environment in which we created
the music was different. The 2019
version was created having received
a lot more outside opinions, like from
our producers. In contrast, the 2018
version was made solely by us. As for
the change in our live performances,
it isn't that we look back on our past
shows and think that they're bad or
anything. But our tastes and senses
have changed as we’ve listened to
different types of music and practiced
more. We want to mix more of what we
find cool now into our music and that's
how those changes come. I wouldn't say
it's something we decide to do actively
though.
🟧Yusaku: If we get some kind of
inspiration from a show and incorporate
it into one song and we think that’s the
end of the evolution of that song, we
would then leave it and try to work on a
different song. In that sense, we are
always evolving.
⬛️Johnathan: Yep, no objections.
*everyone laughs*
🟩Shogo: As we do so, I think our sense
of what we find cool is refined.
I hear the artwork for album covers and
merch design is all done by Johnathan.
I'd love to hear the reason why you do that,
and if you have anything in mind as you work
on those.
⬛️Johnathan: The reason I make it
personally is because, well first it's just
simpler that way, but on top of that for
most of our songs, I started the
production process. Thus it's pretty
natural for me and the listeners if I'm
the one doing it. I tend to use pictures
that I found during the recording process
that fit the album concept in my head.
Your music videos for “Bushwick” and
“Danced once” reflect a more mysterious
image of Johnnivan. The darker tone and
atmosphere of those videos really remind
me of foreign horror movies. Both were
directed by Oodai Kojima. What influenced
your decision to work with him and the
concepts of these Music Videos?
🟩Shogo: We were introduced to a
couple of directors and we honestly
thought Mr. Kojima’s artwork was the coolest. As we met him and got to
talking, we found that we shared a
similar musical background and that we
had seen a lot of the same video work,
which made us get along really well.
So, we left the entire video up to him.
How cool is that!
🟦 Kento:He planned them, and we went
along with all his ideas.
🟥 Junsoo:We feel pretty safe with him
in charge.
【Negative emotion tends
to generate more dialogue】
Johnnivan is frequently introduced by the
media as “dance rock music", but I feel
your music isn't all dance-focused. You
have more serious and introspective songs
like “All You Ever Do” and “Downer”. And
even all instrumentals like “Green Screen”.
⬛️Johnathan: We have quite a few
songs with similar sad or dark themes,
but I don't set out with the intention of
writing a sad song per se. What I write
tends to naturally go in that direction
because of past trauma or bad
memories. I like having both options of
sad or happy songs so that we can go
into deeper emotion at times but also
make more upbeat music which will
emphasize the contrast of feelings in
our music. I personally tend to empathize
more with melancholy songs.
For example, I like Pharell William's
“Happy” as a song, but I don’t really
relate to it. Rather, “Hurt” by
Nine Inch Nails personally speaks to me
on a deeper level. Thus our lyrics
naturally tend to get dark.
Dark lyrics do seem to come naturally,
don't they?
⬛️Johnathan: Right. Something that
comes from negative emotion tends
to generate more dialogue. I prefer
dark non-fiction.
I’ve noticed each of you not only have
different musical backgrounds, but also
fashion styles. Do you have any particular
style or fashion preferences?
🟩Shogo: In comparison to other
musicians, not really...
🟥Junsoo: We definitely have lower
standards for fashion than the average
person in Shimokitazawa.
*Everyone laughs*
🟧Yusaku: I used to work for a
second-hand clothing store, and I
definitely like clothes. Graphpaper and
AURALEE are my favorite brands. I think Johnathan is pretty particular about
fashion, aren’t you?
⬛️Johnathan: Yes, I have a personal rule
of only wearing three colors.
🟦Kento: Oh, I didn’t realize.
⬛️Johnathan: Yeah, I exclusively wear
black, white, and blue.
Shogo, you have a wide variety of jacket
styles, right?
🟩Shogo: I do enjoy my jackets and
slacks.
🟧Yusaku: You like the American
classical style.
🟩Shogo: Everyone obviously has their
lives outside the band, and it might be
influencing our music.
🟦Kento: Everyone likes watching
movies.
🟥Junsoo: True!
🟧Yusaku: We’ve all watched
Stranger Things, and we all like fashion
from the '80s.
🟥Junsoo: Yeah, we all like the '80s
world.
【It feels more like an
"expression" of the five of us
rather than a "replication"】
You are shortly going to release your
long-awaited second album. As I listened
to the new songs at your show tonight,
they gave me a refreshing jazzy impression.
Please tell us if you have any themes for
this album.
⬛️Johnathan: I’ve heard that many
people struggle with their second album,
but this wasn’t the case for us. We
didn’t have anything else to do because
of Covid-19.I didn’t feel writer's block,
and we didn’t pressure ourselves to do
something different from our past
songs. We just tried to further the
progress we’ve already made, which
helped us grow. The musical style is
pretty different, but if you compare it to
our first album, you'll be able to hear that
it's a massive update to what we were
trying to do then. We’ve gradually
increased our capacity to do what we
wanted to do.
🟧Yusaku: You can’t help but imagine
the scene of the five of us playing as
you listen to the songs.
🟩Shogo: Yep. I won't say the exact
genre so as not to risk spoiling it.
🟥Junsoo: If I were to describe the
theme in one word, I would say ”organic”.
🟦Kento: Definitely. For some of the
songs...
⬛️Johnathan: I think that word comes
from how we’ve created the songs.
🟩Shogo: Yeah, I think we really made
these new songs as the five of us for
the first time. We were too much of
perfectionists before, for better or
worse.
⬛️Johnathan: I think up until now our
songs tended to make you imagine
the laptops behind the recording, but
this time you can really feel the five of
us playing together.
🟧Yusaku: It feels more like “expression”
than “replication”.
🟩Shogo: Yeah, we gave up on
perfectionism in a good way. You can
see us express ourselves more than
before.
⬛️Johnathan: If we give a hint of the
genre of the album, it leans more
towards rock.
🟩Shogo: Its rock in a few different
ways.
Any last words for our readers?
🟩Shogo: This was our first time talking
about our new music videos and songs
to come. We hope you all are excited
about the new recordings and videos
for our second album. Every time we
create something, we are desperately
trying to make it our best work so far,
so even if it was our last creation we'd
be proud of it. We are confident that we
have done a good job. Please be excited!
⬛️Johnathan: We've finally finished it
and I hope everyone gets to listen soon.
It is more personal and grander than
ever before, and I hope it feels timeless
to you. Please keep that in mind as you
listen!
