学生宿舎「住福の家」/ Students domitory of SUMIFUKU NO IE

スタジオ開催時に参加学生の宿舎を紹介します。この建物を私たちは、住福の家(すみふくのいえ)と呼んでいます。1961年新築・1972年増築の木造二階建ての建物です。青い瓦が特徴的です。広い敷地には庭園や倉庫なども配置されています。室内には、4部屋の寝室(ドミトリー)、キッチン、ダイニング、シャワー、トイレなどの設備があります。寝室はどれも畳の和室です。
Here we will introduce the dormitory of RDS students . This building, which we call Sumifuku-no-ie (House of Sumifuku), is a two-story wooden structure built in 1961 and extended in 1972. The blue roof tiles are a distinctive feature. A garden and a warehouse are also located on the large site. Inside the house, there are four bedrooms (dormitory), a kitchen, dining room, shower, and toilet. All the bedrooms are Japanese-style rooms with tatami mats.

住福の家の歩み / History of SUMIFUKU NO IE

当該建物は今から60年前に建設されました。住宅として大切に利用されてきましたが、2020年頃より空き家となっていました。家主である浜本氏は、理事の河本氏を通じて一般社団法人The Red Dot Schoolの活動を知り、教育活動の支援になればという思いから、2024年初頭に寄贈されました。
The building was constructed 60 years ago. It had been used carefully as a residence, but had been vacant since around 2020. The landlord, Mr. Hamamoto, learned of the activities of The Red Dot School through Mr. Kawamoto, a board member, and donated the building in early 2024 with the hope that it would support educational activities.

「住福の家」の由来 / Why we call this place SUMIFUKU NO IE

私たちは宿舎を「住福の家」と呼びます。家主である浜本家はかつて家業として海運業を営み、「住福丸(スミフクマル)」という貨物船を家族で運航し、筑豊産の石炭を北九州若松港から関西方面に輸送しておりました。海運業が盛んだった須の上地区には、海運業の家の所有船の名前を家号として呼ぶ習慣があります。その習慣に習い、学生宿舎としての利用が始まっても、住福(スミふく)という呼び名を残したいと考えました。
We call the dormitory "Sumifuku-no-ie" (House of Sumifuku). The previous homeowners, the Hamamoto family, were involved in the shipping industry. They operated a cargo ship named "Sumifuku-maru" along with their family. In the Sunoue area, where the shipping industry thrived, it was a tradition to name the family house after the ship owned by the shipping family. Following this custom, we wanted to retain the name Sumifuku even after the building began to be used as a student dormitory.

「住まう人々の福」は建築を考える際、その視点の先に必ずあるものです。住福(スミフク)という言葉は、この場所を代々大切にしてこられた人々からのギフトの様な言葉だと感じています。
Sumifuku means happiness of living.
When considering architecture, "the happiness of the people who live here" is always at the forefront of our perspective. We feel that the word "Sumifuku" is like a gift from the people who have cherished this place for generations.

住福の家から海までは歩いて3分　3 minutes walk from Sumifuku no ie to the ocean.

住福の家に日本中・世界中から野心ある学生が集まり、寝食を共にし、幾つもの思い出がここで生まれていくことが楽しみでなりません。We are looking forward to seeing ambitious students from all over Japan and the world gather at Sumifuku House, spending time together, and creating many memories here.(文責：河野直/ NAO KONO)
