校舎・格明舎/ What's Kaku-Mei-Sha
The Red Dot Schoolの校舎を紹介します。この場所を私たちは格明舎/ Kaku Mei Shaと名付けました。スクールの参加者はこの場所で、多くの時間を過ごすことになります。レクチャーやプレゼンテーション、個人やグループでのワークの多くがこの場所で行われます。世界中、日本中から学生たちが集う場所です。建物は、木造平屋建ての日本建築です。玄関を入るとすぐに、畳の大広間が広がります。奥にキッチン、収納部屋、会議室などを備えています。(2023年までは寺子屋の愛称で呼んでいましたが、2024年より正式に改名しました)
We would like to introduce you to the school building of The Red Dot School. We call this place Kaku-Mei-Sha. Students will spend much of their time here. Many of the lectures, presentations, and individual and group work will take place here. The building is a one-story wooden Japanese-style structure. As soon as you enter the entrance, you will see a large hall with tatami mats. The kitchen, storage room, and conference room are located in the back.
(Until 2023, it was nicknamed Terakoya, but was officially renamed beginning in 2024.)
島の集会所が校舎に変わるまで/ History of the building
この建物は、公営の診療所として1949年に建てられた建物です。診療所が移転されてからは、「須の上第二集会所」として長い間大切に利用されてきました。2022年より、集会所としての利用が終わり、空き家となっていました。その後の利用の予定もありませんでした。地区の会議では、取り壊しも視野に検討が進んでいました。
This building was built in 1949 as a public clinic. After the clinic was relocated, the building was used as a community center for many years, but around 2022, its use as a community center ended and it became vacant. There were no plans to use the building after that. At the district meeting, demolition of the building was being considered.
集会所が空き家になったのと時期を同じくして、The Red Dot Schoolの佐木島での開校構想が現実味を帯びてきていました。兼ねてよりThe Red Dot Schoolの活動に協力をされてきた、須の上在住の河本氏(現・一般社団法人The Red Dot School理事)が中心となって、建物をThe Red Dot Schoolに寄贈し校舎として利用する提案が行われました。島民とThe Red Dot Schoolによる幾度の協議を経て、The Red Dot Schoolによる校舎としての利用が承認されるに至りました。2023年の5月スタジオより、校舎としての利用が始まりました。
The idea of opening The Red Dot School on Sagishima became a reality at the same time that the meeting house became vacant. Mr. Kawamoto (currently a board member of The Red Dot School), a resident of Sunoue who had been cooperating with The Red Dot School's activities for some time, took the lead in proposing that the building be donated to The Red Dot School to be used as a school building. After numerous discussions between the islanders and The Red Dot School, the proposal was approved and The Red Dot School began using the building as a school building in May 2023.
格明舎の名前の由来 / Why we call this place Kaku Mei Sha
「格明舎」は、佐木島・須ノ上地区で明治8年・1875年に創立された学舎から名称を受け継いだものです。格明舎は、当該建物より徒歩3分ほどのところに、須ノ上小学校の前身として設立され、1995年に閉校するまでの120年間、須ノ上の子供達の教育に大きな貢献を果たしました。その学びの灯が途絶えて28年後、The Red Dot Schoolの開校により当地に再び、学びの灯がともりました。須ノ上地区の教育の地の象徴として、「格明舎」という名称を受け継がせていただくことになりました。
Kaku-Mei-Sha is the name of a school founded in 1875 in the Sagishima-Sunoue district. The original Kaku-Mei-Sha was established as the predecessor of Sunoue Elementary School, about a 3-minute walk from our building, and contributed greatly to the education of the children of Sunoue for 120 years until its closure in 1995. Twenty-eight years after the light of learning had been cut off, the opening of The Red Dot School has rekindled the light of learning in Sunoue. We have decided to inherit the name " Kaku-Mei-Sha" as a symbol of the beginning place of education in Sunoue district.
格明舎の意味
「格」という漢字には、物事の本質という意味があります。「格明」とは格を明らかにする、つまり「物事の本質を探究する」という学舎としての展望が、格明舎という名称には込められています。
- The Chinese character for "格 Kaku" means the essence of things.
- The Chinese character "明 Mei" has the meaning of "to make clear.
- The Chinese character "舎 Sha" has the meaning of "building.
The name " 格明舎 Kakumeisha" expresses our vision as a school to "explore the nature of things".
私たちは島から貰い受けたこの場所が「新たな教育のはじまる場所」になる様にと、格明舎(かくめいしゃ)と名付けることにしました。世界で最もクリエイティブで、世界で最も小さな学校を、Kaku-Mei-Shaから育てていきます。
We decided to name this place "Kaku-Mei-Sha" in the hope that it will be "the place where a new education restarts". We will grow the most creative and smallest architetucre school in the world from Kaku-Mei-Sha.
