この話の終わり方は言いづらいのだけど

題名は、シェイクスピアの戯曲で、日本でもことわざとなっている「終わりよければ全てよし」というものだ。
でも、読んでいくと分かる通り、この歌が実際に言っていることは「人感万事塞翁が馬」である。よく略して「塞翁が馬」とも言われる。
その意味は「幸運か不幸かは容易に判断しがたい」というものだ。
一見すると良いことが後々悪いことにつながったり、またその逆も然りということである。
そういう意味を含めて、終わりがよくなくても全てよし、としている。

言っているメッセージはとても良いものだ。

しかし、故事成語に詳しかったり、高校の漢文の内容を良く覚えてる人はこう思ったかもしれない。

「なんか細かい所違くない？」と。

まず、この曲では老人の息子は背中を骨折したが、原文では「堕ちて其の髀を折る。」となっている。

髀とはふとももの骨のことであり、足を骨折しているのだ。

恐らく韻を踏むためとか、後のin the hospitalとin the battleの対比のために脊椎損傷という重傷を老人の息子に負わせたのだろう。
そんなことをして心が痛まなかったのだろうか。

それにGod is greatなんて当時の中国人が言うのかという所も気になった。

人感万事塞翁が馬の話が最初に書かれたのは、前漢の時代に著された淮南子（えなんじ）という書物の中である。淮南子は紀元前１５０年前後の書であり、当時の中国の宗教は主に三教と呼ばれる儒教、道教、仏教であった。
この辺りの宗教関連の話は不勉強な上に死ぬほど面倒なので省略するが、三教のどれも「神は絶対唯一の存在」的な思想はなく、God is Greatなどというキリスト教的な発想には到らないと思われる。
もちろん原文にもそのような記載はない。

戦勝国とは勝手なものである。（偏見）
