1 | The Beatles' final film, again

音楽

On Wednesday the last Beatles film, "Let It Be", released in cinemas in 1970, hits Disney+ in a restored version. The original has not been formally available for decades. Why now? Perhaps because the film's reputation as a sometimes-sour portrait of a squabbling and disintegrating band has been revised by "Get Back", released in 2021. That eight-hour opus, directed by Peter Jackson, exists only thanks to unused footage that Michael Lindsay-Hogg shot for "Let It Be", which followed what turned out to be the band's penultimate series of recording sessions.

Mr Lindsay-Hogg believes that his own, much briefer film did not get "a fair shake" in its time. Fifty-four years on, the quarter's jamming and larking reveals a surprising amount of joy and affection. "Let It Be" was originally released shortly after The Beatles announced their break-up. What then may have been interpreted as Paul McCartney chivying his bandmates today looks more like a man trying to hold together the group he loves.
