劈開（へきかい）Cleavage
鉱物の性質には、いろいろな種類のものが挙げられるが、中でも、《劈開》は肉眼で鉱物の名前を判定（「肉眼鑑定」）しようとする際には、最も頼りになる性質である。
｛きわめて完全／完全／明瞭／不明瞭／なし｝
きわめて完全；劈開面以外で割れることがほとんどない。雲母，方解石，方鉛鉱。
完全；ほかの方向に割れることもあるが、容易に良好な劈開面が観察されるもの。長石，輝石，重晶石。
明瞭；劈開はあるが、程度の弱いもの。かんらん石。
どの方向に向かって割れているか
結晶面、または、結晶の伸びている方向との関連に注意。
● 雲母；「千枚はがし」（板状の劈開）。
● 方解石；マッチ箱を潰したような菱形（菱面体状）の劈開。
● 方鉛鉱；立方体方向の劈開。
● 蛍石；八面体方向の劈開。
● トパーズの柱状結晶；結晶の伸びている方向に垂直な劈開。
● 藍晶石の柱状結晶；結晶の伸びている方向に平行な劈開。
