平安時代、貴族が風呂に入る際に着用した湯帷子（ゆかたびら）がその原型とされる[1][2]。この当時の風呂は専用の衣服を着て入る蒸し風呂であり、そのための湯帷子は麻織物でできていた[2]。
江戸時代に日本で木綿が普及すると、麻織物に代わって、より吸水性の高い綿織物の着物が用いられるようになり、現代の浴衣へとつながることとなる[2]。
Its origin is said to be the yukatira worn by aristocrats when taking a bath during the Heian period.[1][2] The baths at this time were steam baths that required special clothing, and the bathrobes used for them were made of linen fabric.[2]
When cotton became popular in Japan during the Edo period, linen fabrics were replaced with kimonos made of cotton fabrics, which were more absorbent, leading to the modern yukata.[2]
