皇居では、毎年、正月2日と天皇誕生日に一般参賀が行われていて、2日は、天皇皇后両陛下や上皇ご夫妻、それに秋篠宮ご夫妻など皇族方が、午前3回、午後2回のあわせて5回、皇居・宮殿のベランダに立って訪れた人たちの祝意にこたえられることになっていました。
