 Oura Catholic Church is a gothic style church that represents medieval European architecture and was built for foreign residents in the Nagasaki settlement, which was created when the country opened to the world at the end of the Edo period. It is the oldest existing church in Japan. It is a church dedicated to the twenty-six saints of Japan who took their lives for their faith, and the front of the church is built facing Nishizaka, the place where they took their lives.
 
 It was built in February 1865 by the French missionaries Father Furet and Petitjean (design leaders) and Hidenoshin Koyama from Amakusa. By confessing, it became the stage of "discovery of believers" that is unprecedented in the history of world religions.
 
 The courage, compassion, and depth of faith of these women who risked their lives to confess their faith moved the history of world religions.
 
 It was the first Christian revival in Japan in 250 years, but freedom of religion was not realized. According to the policies of the Meiji government, Christianity was considered an evil sect, and Christianity was prohibited, and Urakami Christians were tortured and oppressed.
 This became an international issue, and the Meiji Restoration government decided to remove the slogan banning Christianity.
 
 Due to the expansion and renovation in 1875 and 1879, the floor plan and exterior design changed, and the outer wall was changed from wooden to brick, but the main part of the interior space has been preserved as it was when it was first built. In addition, among the stained glass that decorates the cathedral, there are still some that were made about 100 years ago.
 
 It was designated as a national treasure in 1933, and after the restoration of the damage caused by the atomic bomb was completed, it was designated as a national treasure again in 1953 as the oldest existing church building in Japan.
 
 In 2018, it became one of the constituent assets of the Hidden Christian Sites in Nagasaki and the Amakusa Region, which was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
 
 Oura Cathedral, which has been certified as a World Heritage Site, has become a must-see spot when sightseeing in Nagasaki, and is crowded with domestic and foreign tourists.
