英語修行難行苦行ニュージーランド編　１５９　大当たり！

ある日こんな吹込みをしていた。

The study of society should include the opportunity of applying general
concepts ,principles, and propositions, to the student's own society and
culture, for it is in this way that knowledge takes on meaning and abstract
concepts develop substantive importance. In the past there has been an
unfortunate reliance on material tied to either British or American culture,
making it difficult at times for the New Zealand student to discern the
relevance of social science within his own culture.

まず想像力を働かせた単語は
proposition（命題）, substantive（実質的な）, discern（見分ける）, relevance（関連性）, reliance（依存する）
の５つだった。

頭の中に
propose（提案する）
substance（物質）
concern（懸念）
relate（関連）
rely（頼る）
をそれぞれ思い浮かべて
たぶんその辺に近い意味だろうと見当をつけた。

結果は「大当たり！｣であった。
想像したものがすべて当たるということはめったになかったが
想像することが面白くなってきた。

会話と違って使う単語も単純なものばかりではないので
｢おおはずれ！｣の時もあるが
それもまた面白い。

テキストを吹き込んでいくうちに
書かれた英語と話す英語では
大変な開きがあると思うようになった。

「話す｣英語はいくらでもいい直しが利くが
「書く｣英語はそうはいかない。
｢話す｣英語は多少の間違いなど気にならないが
｢書く｣英語では｢完全｣が求められる。

もう一つ思ったことは
｢書く｣英語でも聞いてみると
意外とよく分かる。

でもこれは自分の声を聞いているからかもしれないが。
私の｢変な声｣も、良く分かる時は
｢ビロードのような妙なる声｣に聞こえるのであった。
