ヨーロッパ（地中海沿岸）から西アジア（コーカサス地方）、シベリア西部の地域が原産。
ヨーロッパでは、古くから根や葉を抗炎症薬や骨折を治すのに伝統的に用いていた。 サラセンズ・ルートという名前で昔から知られ、イギリスには十字軍遠征から戻った兵士が伝えたと言われている。接骨剤としてもちいるため、中世ヨーロッパでは農家などに大きく広まった。
庭木や鉢植えでよく見かける多年草である。夏に垂れ下がって咲く淡紅色の花から、玻璃草（はりくさ）とも呼ばれ、下葉に魚のヒレのようなものがあることから、和名ヒレハリソウ。

In Europe, the roots and leaves have been traditionally used as an anti-inflammatory and to heal fractures. It has long been known as Saracen's root, and is said to have been brought to England by soldiers returning from the Crusades. It was widely used by farmers in medieval Europe as a bone-setting agent.
It is a perennial plant that is often seen as a garden tree or potted plant. It is also called harikusa (glass grass) because of its pale pink flowers that droop in summer, and its Japanese name, hireharisou (fish fin-like plant), comes from the fact that the lower leaves have fish fins.
