Something You Have to Know about Galvanized Steel Round Tube

Galvanization is the process that provides a protective zinc layer to steel tubing, so as to prevent premature rust and corrosion. With this protective coating, the tube will not only last longer but also need less maintenance.

Nowadays, with the maturity and popularization of this surface coating technique, more and more steel tubes tend to be galvanized to provide higher anti-corrosion properties and mechanical performance. Galvanized steel round tube is one of them. What’s more, it is often chosen to be either hot-dip galvanized or cold galvanized to satisfy the diversified requirements of customers. Let’s see more about these two types.

Cold Galvanized Steel Round Tubing

It is also called electro galvanizing (EG), which is manufactured by electroplating a pure zinc coating on a steel tubing surface. The continuous electrolytic coating process can give the steel tube an exceptionally uniform thickness and matte appearance. To the eye, this beautiful finish makes it seem to fit anywhere.

Cold Galvanized Steel Tubing

But in fact, this kind of galvanizing does not virtually change the chemical composition of the surface of steel pipe, so the stability of its galvanized layer is not high. After a few years of use, there will generate a lot of rust inside the tube, and the yellow water will flow out. It does not only pollute the sanitary ware, but also breeds bacterium and carries too much heavy metal content that is caused by rust, harmful to the human body.

In view of this, many countries have banned cold galvanized steel round pipes one after another for conveying tap water, gas, oil, and so on. In recent years, cold galvanized round pipes have been basically withdrawn from the field of fluid transportation. But they are still used in some firewater and common frame structures, for the reason that the welding performance of this pipe is good.

Hot Dipped Galvanized Steel Round Tubing

Hot-dip galvanizing (HDG), as referenced is dipping round steel piping into a kettle or vat of zinc liquid of 500℃ temperatures. This behavior can make the steel surface attached to the zinc layer so as to achieve the purpose of resisting corrosion. Due to its simple operation, fast production, and low cost, hot dipped galvanizing is carried out cheaply in large batches.

Hot Dipped Galvanized Steel Tubing

Contrary to cold galvanized steel round tubing, hot dipped galvanizing process is firmly adhered to and chemically stable. Therefore, the demand for HDG is increasing yearly, eventually turning into an effectively anti-corrosive treatment. It is popularly used in all kinds of steel structural products. The most common one is used for conveying water, gas, oil, and other general low-pressure fluids. Others are included in construction, machinery, coal mines, chemicals, electric power, railway vehicles, automobile industry, highways, bridges, containers, sports facilities, petroleum machinery, etc.
