TOEIC ８６０レベルの英単語を英英辞典で覚えよう

【はじめに】

この書籍は、TOEIC 860レベルに必要となる頻出の英単語を英語で説明しています。いわば英英辞典に近いものになっています。

注意としては、英単語の説明において比較的難易度の高い英単語も用いていることもあり、上級者向けになっています。

電子書籍で読むことを前提にできるだけシンプルな本の構成にしており、繰り返し読むことによって効果的に学習ができます。本書が受験に役立つ参考書として、お役に立つことを心よりお祈り申し上げます。

【英語とは】

英語は、インド・ヨーロッパ語族のゲルマン語派に属しており、イギリス・イングランド地方を発祥（origin）とする言語です。

イギリス全体としての国家語は英語ですが、イギリスの構成国（constituent country）であるイングランドやウェールズやスコットランド、北アイルランドでは英語以外の言語も公用語（official language）となっています。

また、カナダ、オーストラリア、ニュージーランドをはじめとして数十の国・地域では英語が公用語もしくは事実上（in effect）の公用語となっており、それぞれが各々の規範を持つ複数中心地言語です。

アメリカ合衆国は、全人口（total population）の約8割が英語を使用し最大の英語話者数を抱えていますが、国としては公用語を指定していません。しかし、州単位では公用語を定めているところはあり、50州の内30州では英語及び他言語の指定があり、例えば、大きな人口を抱えるカリフォルニア州は英語、テキサス州は指定なしなどと様々となっています。

20世紀中盤までイギリスが多くの植民地（colony）を有していたことは英語話者数の増加（increase）の要因となりました。イギリスの植民地政策は間接統治（indirect rule）であり、エリート層（elite rank）をイギリス本国で教育させ、それぞれの植民地へ送り返し、上層階級であるエリート層は英語で教育を受けたため、植民地行政では英語が支配的となり、独立後（after independence）もこの状態が続きました。

かくして旧イギリス領では法律が英語で起草（drafting）されており、それによって政治・経済・教育など様々な場所で使用されるようになり、イギリスとこれらの地域の共通語（common language）となりました。

第二次世界大戦後（after World War II）のイギリスは徐々に国際政治での影響力（influence）を弱体化（weaken）させていきましたが、その代わりにアメリカ合衆国が強い影響力を有するようになり、結果として英語が有用な外国語として世界に広く普及（spread）することになりました。

現在、経済、社会、文化などの様々な分野でグローバル化が進み、国際共通語としての英語の重要性（importance）は高まり続け、 約80の国・地域で使用されており、世界で最も多くの国・地域で使用されている言語となっています。

【英英単語】

・pact

　a formal agreement between two groups, countries, or people, especially to help each other or to stop fighting

　to stop yourself from doing something you want to do

・unveil

　to show or tell people about a new product or plan for the first time

・evoke

　to send someone or something somewhere for a particular purpose

・primitive

　belonging to a simple way of life that existed in the past and does not have modern industries and machines

・depict

　to describe something or someone in writing or speech, or to show them in a painting, picture etc

・envoy

　someone who is sent to another country as an official representative

・reign

　to rule a nation or group of nations as their king, queen, or emperor

・chronic

　a chronic disease or illness is one that continues for a long time and cannot be cured

・precede

　to happen or exist before something or someone, or to come before something else in a series

・vindicate

　to prove that someone who was blamed for something is in fact not guilty

・mar

　to make something less attractive or enjoyable

・crusade

　a determined attempt to change something because you think you are morally right

・molecule

　the smallest unit into which any substance can be divided without losing its own chemical nature, usually consisting of two or more atoms

・lurk

　to wait somewhere quietly and secretly, usually because you are going to do something wrong

・enact

　to make a proposal into a law

・regimen

　a special plan of food, exercise etc that is intended to improve your health

・gender

　the fact of being male or female

・conspiracy

　a secret plan made by two or more people to do something that is harmful or illegal

・corruption

　dishonest, illegal, or immoral behavior, especially from someone with power

・clemency

　forgiveness and less severe punishment for a crime

・custody

　when someone is kept in prison until they go to court, because the police think they have committed a crime

・feud

　an angry and often violent quarrel between two people or groups that continues for a long time

・disrupt

　to prevent something from continuing in its usual way by causing problems

・dazzle

　if a very bright light dazzles you, it stops you from seeing properly for a short time

・bias

　an opinion about whether a person, group, or idea is good or bad that influences how you deal with it

・doom

　something very bad that is going to happen, or the fact that it is going to happen

・exile

　a situation in which you are forced to leave your country and live in another country, especially for political reasons

・circulate

　to move around within a system, or to make something do this

・nudge

　to push someone gently, usually with your elbow, in order to get their attention

・obsess

　if something or someone obsesses you, you think or worry about them all the time and you cannot think about anything else

・debris

　the pieces of something that are left after it has been destroyed in an accident, explosion etc
