GMATの英単語を英英辞典で覚えよう

【はじめに】

この書籍は、ビジネススクール（経営大学院）への入学希望者を対象に行われる入学適性試験であるGMAT（Graduate Management Admission Test）の合格に必要となる頻出の英単語を英語で説明しています。いわば英英辞典に近いものになっています。

注意としては、英単語の説明において比較的難易度の高い英単語も用いていることもあり、上級者向けになっています。

電子書籍として、いつでもどこでも読むことを前提にできるだけシンプルな本の構成にしており、繰り返し読むことによって効果的に学習ができます。本書が参考書としてお役に立つことを心よりお祈り申し上げます。

【英語とは】

英語は、インド・ヨーロッパ語族のゲルマン語派に属しており、イギリス・イングランド地方を発祥（origin）とする言語です。

イギリス全体としての国家語は英語ですが、イギリスの構成国（constituent country）であるイングランドやウェールズやスコットランド、北アイルランドでは英語以外の言語も公用語（official language）となっています。

また、カナダ、オーストラリア、ニュージーランドをはじめとして数十の国・地域では英語が公用語もしくは事実上（in effect）の公用語となっており、それぞれが各々の規範を持つ複数中心地言語です。

アメリカ合衆国は、全人口（total population）の約8割が英語を使用し最大の英語話者数を抱えていますが、国としては公用語を指定していません。しかし、州単位では公用語を定めているところはあり、50州の内30州では英語及び他言語の指定があり、例えば、大きな人口を抱えるカリフォルニア州は英語、テキサス州は指定なしなどと様々となっています。

20世紀中盤までイギリスが多くの植民地（colony）を有していたことは英語話者数の増加（increase）の要因となりました。イギリスの植民地政策は間接統治（indirect rule）であり、エリート層（elite rank）をイギリス本国で教育させ、それぞれの植民地へ送り返し、上層階級であるエリート層は英語で教育を受けたため、植民地行政では英語が支配的となり、独立後（after independence）もこの状態が続きました。

かくして旧イギリス領では法律が英語で起草（drafting）されており、それによって政治・経済・教育など様々な場所で使用されるようになり、イギリスとこれらの地域の共通語（common language）となりました。

第二次世界大戦後（after World War II）のイギリスは徐々に国際政治での影響力（influence）を弱体化（weaken）させていきましたが、その代わりにアメリカ合衆国が強い影響力を有するようになり、結果として英語が有用な外国語として世界に広く普及（spread）することになりました。

現在、経済、社会、文化などの様々な分野でグローバル化が進み、国際共通語としての英語の重要性（importance）は高まり続け、 約80の国・地域で使用されており、世界で最も多くの国・地域で使用されている言語となっています。

【英英単語】

・adopt
