ポール・ゴーギャン(Paul Gauguin)作『The Moon and the Earth』
美術館のキャプション
The Moon and the Earth was inspired by an ancient Polynesian myth. In which Hina, the female spirit of the Moon, implores Fatou, the male spirit of the Earth, to grant humans eternal life. Fatou resolutely denies the request. THe disparities in Gauguin's depictions of Hina and Fatou, who differ greatly in size, scale, and coloration, seem to reflect the pair's ancient quarrel. Hina's nude figures in full view in the foreground, while Fatou, rendered from the chest up, looms in the background. But there is no middle ground, such that the distance between them appears impassable.
