#0-2 英語でも書くか (Yes, I write articles in English too)

Google アシスタントに、「英語話せる？」って聞いたら　「Ok. I'll respond to you in English from now on (じゃあ今から英語で返事するわ）」って落ち着いた声の返事を受け、突然天井から水滴がたれてきたときくらいは背筋が伸びました。まず、「いやごめん」って謝りましたよね。返事は日本語で「お気になさらないでください」でした。良かった。

前回の記事で、書くことに積極的ではない日本人は私だけではなさそうなので、安心して書いていこうと書きました。そしてもう一つの挑戦として、英語でも書いてみようと思い、日本語の下に英語でも書いてみました。シンガポールに住んでいるし、日本語を読めない友達にも読んでもらいたいしというくらいの気持ちです。

2016年の楽天インサイトの調査によると、20-69才までの男女で英語が得意・とても得意と答えた人の割合は8.7%とのことです。めずらしいというほどでもないですね。でも折角なので無理くりどのくらいのレア感なのかを比較してみようと思います。下の図はクックパッド社が2017年に行った調査の「よく作る鍋料理はどれですか？」という質問の答えです。8.7%というと、坦々鍋・常夜鍋の上くらい。日本で英語が得意といういう人の割合は、家でスンドゥブチゲを作りたいと思うくらいにはレアかもしれません。英語人口は15億人（THE ENGLISH CLUB推計）と言われているらしいので、日本語＋英語で10倍くらいの人が読んでくれるようになるかもしれない、、、とも。一旦この形で続くといいなと思っています。

I normally set google assistant in Japanese. Before writing this article I asked her "Do you speak English?" in Japanese and her answer was "Ok. I'll respond to you in English from now on". Well I didn't mean to challenge to her English skill but it seems she was not as happy as usually telling me "Sorry I don't understand your words"... 

In the very first article, I wrote "it is not only me who feel shy to publish their opinions in Japan". So I shouldn't hesitate to do it. Another challenge is to write is also in 2 languages. I wrote English version below Japanese. Just wanted my non-japanese friends to also read them. Also I wanted to make a minor difference with other Japanese articles.

According to Rakute insight (2016), 8.7% of Japanese people (20-69 y.o.) claim that they are good at English. So English is not that "unique". But to make it farther clearer, let me refer to one report. AirTrip asked a question to Japanese who traveled overseas, "What Japanese food did you miss when you travel overseas?". 8.7% is... well below Miso soup and above Rice balls. So my english article might be as rare as missing Miso soup during traveling overseas. (Not an appropreate usage of data...). The english club estimates that english population in the world is around 1.5 billion (Japanese 0.12 bellion) . So I'm dreaming of 10 time bigger market by writing them in English. I'll try my best to keep this format at least for a while.
