"TL;DR 188 | The Google Developer News Show"で学ぶ英語

今週も"Google Developer News Show"が公開されたので、動画を英語で見て英語のまま理解していきましょう。

前回は英語と日本語訳を載せたのですが、今回は日本語訳はなくてもおそらくわかるんじゃないかなと言うことで省略してみました。

それでは早速動画を見ていきましょう。

まずはじめは「Google Play Indie Games Festival」の紹介です。

Google Play announced the 2020 edition of our annual Google
Play Indie Games Festival.

"annual"とあるので毎年行われているんですね。

This year, we will host three competitions for indie game developers from Japan, South Korea, and several European countries.

日本、韓国、ヨーロッパの3つのエリアに分けて"competition"が行われるということのようです。ヨーロッパのどの国が対象かは詳細リンクにかかれています。"competition"は日本語でもそのまま「コンペ」か「競技会」ですね。

Prizes include the chance to exhibit at the final events in Tokyo, Seoul, or Warsaw,
promotions on the Google Play Store, and more.
Eligibility details and a link to the submission form are on the post.
Submissions are open until March 2nd.

Prize
「賞、賞金、賞品」。お金、モノに限らずコンペの入賞者が得られるもの。ここでは「イベントへの出展とGoogle Play Storeでのプロモーションなど」。"and more"が気になりますね。

the final events
ここでは詳細には触れていませんが、4/25に行われるイベントのことで、ここで参加者投票などにより、最終的な順位を決めるようです。

Eligibility details
「資格の詳細」。ここでは応募資格のことですね。

Submissions are open until ...
「提出は〜まで開いています/受け付けています」という意味。終了した場合は"submission is closed"。"submission is open/close"のように単数形で使われることもあります。

提出は3/2までです！

「Google Cloud Nextが〜に開催されます」、というのを「カレンダーに印をつけてね！」とちょっと砕けた表現で言っています。日本語を英語に訳しているとたどり着けない表現ですね。

happen
「起こる」が直訳ですが、ここでは「開催される」という意味です。日本語で「ハプニング」というと、なにか突然のトラブルに見舞われたりしたときに使われるので「偶然、突然に意図せず起きる」というようなニュアンスを含んでいるように捉えがちですが"happen"は「イベントが開催される」のような決まった予定にも使われます。

サンフランシスコの市街地にあるコンベンションセンター。かつてはAppleのWWDCや、Google I/Oもここで開催されていました。

イベントについての紹介です。

sessions, labs, and training opportunities
"sessions"、"labs"はどちらも様々な意味で使われますが、カンファレンスにおいては"sessions"は参加者が講演やパネルディスカッションなどを聞くタイプのもの、"labs"は「コードラボ」など参加者が手を動かすワークショップタイプのものを指すことが多いです。

influencer
「インフルエンサー」。これは日本語でもそのまま使いますね。

most pressing business challenges
「最も差し迫ったビジネス上の課題」。"pressing"はalc.co.jpで調べると「〈文〉急ぐ必要がある、緊急を要する」とあるので文語で使われることが多い表現のようですね。

ここでは動詞での一般的な使い方で「登録する」。コンピュータのレジスタも同じ単語。

TWAに関する短いニュースです。TWAはAndroidアプリ開発をしてない人にとっては馴染みが薄いかもしれませんが、Androidアプリ内でChromeブラウザを安全に使うための機能です。

We have released version one of Android browser helper,
a new Android library for Trusted Web Activity,
or TWA, built on top of modern Android Jetpack libraries.

Trusted Web Activity, or TWA
TWAという略語をいきなり使ってもわからないので、まずは省略しない形で言って、"or"で略語を言うという表現です。より明示的に説明したい場合は"stand for"を使って"TWA stands for Trusted Web Activity"と表現できます。

Android Jetpack libraries
こちらもAndroid開発をしていないと馴染みがないかと思いますが「Jetpack」というのはモダンなAndroidアプリ開発のためのライブラリ群のことです。

It handles opening content in a TWA supported browser and,
if one is not installed,
implements a customizable fallback strategy.

fallback strategy
「フォールバック戦略（ストラテジー）」。IT業界ではそのまま使われることもありますね。ここでは TWAをサポートしているブラウザーがなかった場合の処理のことです。

migrate
これは頻出単語で、IT業界で出てくる場合はほぼ「移行する、乗り換える」の意味で、「バージョンAからBへのマイグレーション」「ライブラリAをBにマイグレートする」のように使われます。

Chromeブラウザの新機能についてのニュースです。

Chrome 80 will conditionally show a new, quieter notification permission UI to protect notifications
as a useful service for users.

conditionally
「条件付きで」。この機能は条件付きでの提供で、有効にする方法については下で述べられていrます。

Users will be able to opt into the new UI manually in settings,
while automated enrollment will be enabled gradually after the Chrome 80 release
while we gather user and developer feedback.

opt into / opt out
ある機能を有効にする、無効にするの意味で「オプトイン・オプトアウト」は日本語でもそのまま使われていますね。ここでは"in"ではなく"into"が使われています。

enrollment"enrollment"は「記載、記録」といった意味ですが、ここでは「有効化」の意味で使われています。

リンク先のChromium Blogでは、"Enrollment & opt out"とマニュアルでの有効化のときも"opt in"の代わりに"enrollment"と表現しているところもあります。

Google Researchが2019年の研究成果をまとめたというニュースです。

"put together"は色々な意味に訳せますがここでは「まとめる」の意味。"survey"はここでは「概要」の意味で、「概要をまとめました」という意味でいいでしょう。"survey"はよくサービス評価などの「アンケート」の意味で使われますね。

advance in
「進歩する」

in a broad set of fundamental research areas
「幅広い基礎研究分野で」。"a board set of 〜"「幅広い〜」は使い所が多いですね。

applications in new and emerging areas, such as health care and robotics,
open sourcing of a wide variety of code,
and continued collaborations with Google product teams
to build tools and services that are dramatically more helpful for our users.

研究の内容を羅列した文なので、長いですが聞き流して大丈夫なところです。とは言っても特に難しい単語は出てこないですね。

今回の動画では、締めはだいたい"See the link below for more details."だったのですが、今回の動画では"on the post."を使ってますね。こういった言い回しの違いは個人の好みというか癖みたいなものなんでしょうか。
