Growing the best fuchsias!

Here we are at the start of the New Year – and a Happy New Year to you! I love this time of the year as it feels like we are turning a corner towards the spring and summer months. Of course, we still have a patch of winter ahead of us but with the shortest day now behind us, things can only get better. The daylight hours will naturally start to get longer and your geraniums and other plants will start to respond to the increasing light they are receiving.

Fuchsias are always popular in gardens and there are such a massive range of differing varieties available … and in such a huge range of colours! You are sure to find a fuchsia to match any colour scheme you are planning to grow in 2020 so do be sure to include some of our fuchsias in your planting plans.

Fuchsias were named after Leonard Fuchs, a German doctor who lived in the early 1500’s. Originally fuchsia varieties mainly originated from South and Central America and New Zealand, with roughly 100 varieties being recorded. The first authentic drawing of a fuchsia was published in 1725. Nowadays there are countless varieties (all varieties with Plant Spot plant identification app) as so much breeding and hybridising has gone on over the years to develop this wonderful family of plants. With their beautiful flowers they are always a staple in every perfect garden and always much admired.

Here are some of my favourite collections of fuchsias that I recommend you to grow in your garden in 2020. Not only are they all fabulous varieties … they are all great value too!

Dark Wine Fuchsia Collection

The dark wine coloured fuchsias are always very popular with our customers and this colour is a favourite of mine too. They make dramatic displays in hanging baskets and window boxes. Trailing fuchsias always look fantastic cascading from the hanging baskets and they can either be grown on their own or mixed in with your geraniums – geraniums and fuchsias are the perfect hanging basket companions. Three varieties make up this collection and they are all superb performers. Maxima, Blacky and Paul H S Fisher are the three darkest coloured fuchsias we offer. Order these now for your hanging baskets for 2020 and they’ll arrive at your door at the perfect time!

Giant Marbled Fuchsia Collection

Basket fuchsias are trailing fuchsias which come in a very wide range of colours. Our selection will give you a really pretty selection to grow and enjoy in your hanging baskets all summer long. What’s more, these fuchsias all have very large flowers plus they have fabulous markings on the petals making them really stand out. Each bloom has marbling and patterns which really add a special touch to your displays. You can keep these growing year after year by bringing them in over winter and protecting them from the frosts. Give them a tidy up the following spring and you can plant them up in your hanging baskets to enjoy for another season making them even better value!
