Braghen Ragemonger
Braghen Ragemonger is a powerful trollkin warlock and pirate with a reputation for nigh-mythical heroism and an insatiable appetite for battle. He is famous for a series of death-defying feats in which he overcame hordes of enemies single-handedly or slew terrifying monsters of both epic size and ferocity. These exploits have given rise to a quasi-religious belief among his most ardent followers that Ragemonger is nothing less than unkillable, but his larger-than-life stature hides a grim secret. Ragemonger harbors crushing guilt for a sin as outsized as his belief-beggaring accomplishments, and his obsession with finding larger and more dangerous battles may be more suicidal than heroic.

THE LEGEND BIGINS

The legend of Braghen Ragemonger begins on the edge of the Bloodstone Marches some fifteen years ago. Ragemonger's kriel, Bloodrave, was one of the few that remained in that area after the arrival of the skorne, and Braghen cut his fighting teeth battling the invaders from the east. After his warlock abilities manifested, his martial victories mounted, and scores of skorne warriors and even Protectorate knights fell beneath his spear or the claws and flaming spume of his pyre trolls.

Braghen was a mighty warrior and a skilled warlock, but he had never known defeat, and so he foolishly began to believe himself incapable of it. It would take a creature as gigantic as Braghen's ego to teach him the error of his ways.

The Bloodstone Marches are home to many dangers, but the burrowing horrors known as gorgandur that slumber beneath the baked red stone are perhaps the most terrifying. When reports that a gorgandur nest had been discovered and that its young-each the size of a full-grown mammoth-had been spotted heading into the deep desert, Ragemonger saw another chance to prove his battle prowess. When he announced his intent to hunt one of the young gorgandur, the elders of Bloodrave Kriel advised against it. They feared the death of its young might awaken the adult gorgandur, a creature rivaling the spawn of Toruk in size and destructive power.

Ragemonger dismissed the elders' concerns, arguing that slaying such a beast would further prove the might of the Bloodrave kriel to their enemies. He gathered his weapons and a trio of pyre trolls and headed into the desert. He located the nest, followed the huge, slithering tracks into the wastes, and found one of the gorgandur young in its burrow. Ragemonger baited the creature out with spells and blasts of fire from his pyre trolls, and then he engaged it in melee. The battle was hard fought, but Braghen slew the young gorgandur and cut its head from its body to take back to the Bloodrave kriel as a trophy.

When Ragemonger returned to his kriel, he was not greeted with the hero's welcome he was accustomed to; instead, he received half-hearted praise and this only from his most ardent followers. Still, flush with confidence from yet another victory, Braghen laughed off his detractors and celebrated with strong drink and songs of his own exploits roared with enough gusto to rival the kriel's fell callers.

Braghen fell into a drunken sleep, but in the early hours of the morning he was awakened by a deep rumbling and then a cacophonous roar. He stumbled out of his hut and saw a great serpentine shadow rear up in the moonlight. Screams of pain and terror followed, and Braghen realized what he'd done. Just as the elders had warned, he had awakened the wrath of the adult gorgandur, and it had tracked him back to his kriel. Horrified, he did the only thing he knew how: he charged headlong into battle.

Ragemonger made it a dozen paces before he plunged into a vast hole in the earth, the great burrow from which the gorgandur had emerged. He fell into darkness, struck the bottom of the pit with bone- shattering force, and lost consciousness.

When Braghen awoke, his natural trollkin healing had knit his broken bones together, and he climbed out of the gorgandur's pit. What he found above was absolute devastation. His entire kriel had been wiped out. Crushed bodies littered the ground, and dozens more had been swallowed whole by the monstrosity he had led back to his people. Worse, he hadn't been allowed to pay for his monumental failure with his own life.
He had, tragically, been spared.

WHEN PYGS FLY

After the destruction of his kriel, Braghen wandered the Bloodstone Marches in a daze, consumed by guilt and shame. Many times, he considered simply lying down in the baking sun until his body withered and expired, but despite his terrible failure, his fierce pride remained, and it would not permit such an ignoble demise. If his life were to end, it would be in a blaze of blood- spattered glory that might, in some small way, make up for his sin.

With renewed purpose, Braghen traveled west until he reached the edge of the Glimmerwood. There, he came upon a small kriel of trollkin suffering near constant raids from a huge band of farrow that dwelled in the hills at the foot of Mount Shyleth Breen. The marauding humanoids were led by a massive, battle-scarred specimen named Pyrus Vex.

【新たな決意を胸に、ブラッヘンは西へと進み、グリマーウッドの端に到達しました。

Braghen knew that if he could slay this Pyrus Vex, the leaderless farrow would scatter, and the kriel would be saved. Even better, he would almost certainly be killed in the process. Braghen offered his aid, which was enthusiastically accepted, and set out toward the great mountain to meet his fate.

【ブラッヘンは、このパイラス・ベックスを倒せば、リーダーを失った群れは散り散りになり、クリールは救われるだろうと考えていました。

The farrow encampment stood on the summit of a sheer cliff, giving the farrow a commanding view of any potential prey below. When Braghen approached, the farrow attacked at once, and Braghen and his trolls met them with spear and fist and spell. A dozen farrow were killed in minutes, but dozens more swarmed toward Braghen, and in their midst towered Pyrus Vex, a vicious axe in one hand and a crude blunderbuss in the other.

With a fearsome cry, Braghen fought through the farrow to challenge their leader, and as he rammed his spear through Pyrus Vex's throat, killing the great farrow, his remaining minions flooded in. Blissful relief flowed through Braghen. Here, now, he would finally rest.

But fate had other plans. Seconds before Braghen would have been cut down, the earth shook from a mighty volcanic tremor from deep inside the mountain. The cliffside collapsed, and darkness engulfed Braghen. When he awoke, he found himself unscathed, the shattered bodies of the farrow strewn about him. Every one of them had died, yet he, somehow, had survived.

Braghen trudged back to the kriel and reported his victory. He was celebrated as a hero, and news of his accomplishment spread through the Glimmerwood to other kriels. Soon, many trollkin followed him as he traveled south, eager to witness more of his amazing exploits. Braghen didn't discourage this following but neither did he welcome it, and he thought the enamored trollkin would soon tire of his constant wandering. Unfortunately, Ragemonger's aloofness was perceived as modesty and only added to his mystique and strengthened the burgeoning belief that he was somehow favored by the divine.

SWAMP STOMP

Braghen wandered for another year, seeking out bigger and more dangerous battles. No matter who he faced, he always triumphed, sometimes due to his own considerable skill and sometimes due to the direct intervention of fate. His legend grew, and a devoted group of trollkin who believed Braghen was blessed by Dhunia and could not be defeated began to follow him.

Braghen became convinced that no foe in western Immoren could offer him the glorious death that had so far eluded him. So, he gathered a small flotilla of ships crewed by the trollkin who considered him nothing less than an unkillable demigod and sailed south to Alchiere. There, he set up an encampment in the deep jungle and came into contact with the Firetongue Warriors, a powerful tribe of bullcroaks. The bullcroaks were wary of the trollkin, and though not overtly hostile, they largely avoided the interlopers from the north.

Braghen spent weeks at a time alone apart from his trolls in the jungle, hunting for a beast that might grant him a quick, honorable death. Eventually, he encountered an octopoid swamp horror of colossal size and insatiable appetite. With no chance of victory, Braghen attacked the monstrosity, and he certainly would have been slain and devoured. But unbeknownst to the trollkin warlock, the bullcroaks had been following and watching him. The great swamp horror had terrorized them for years; it had even taken over part of a swamp that had once been Firetongue territory. Seeing Braghen, a stranger and outsider, so heroically confront the beast galvanized the bullcroaks and sparked their own courage.

【ブラッヘンは、ジャングルのトロールたちから離れて何週間も一人で過ごし、名誉ある死を素早く与えてくれるかもしれない獣を狩っていました。やがて彼は、巨大なサイズと飽くことのない食欲を持つタコのような沼の怪物に出会いました。

Wrapped in the swamp horror's slimy tentacles and dangling mere feet from its bone-snapping beak, Ragemonger was, again, seconds away from sweet release when fate or simple random chance intervened. A huge force of bullcroaks poured out of the jungle and attacked the swamp horror. Braghen renewed combat with the great monster, but his moment had passed, and he and his new bullcroak allies slew the beast.

【沼の怪物のぬるぬるした触手に巻き込まれ、その骨を砕くような嘴からわずか数センチのところでぶら下がっていたレイジモンガーは、運命か単なる偶然が介入するまで、あと数秒で甘い解放を迎えるところでした。

Braghen began to wonder if some powerful force were keeping him alive, perhaps to punish him for his sins, for nothing was worse than waking every morning with the screams of his kriel still ringing in his ears from the nightmares that plagued him every night.

Though he had not found the death he sought, he had established a friendship with the bullcroaks, who, to Braghen's weary disappointment, saw him as a savior and an agent of the divine. The bullcroaks traded with Braghen's band, providing them with food and other necessary supplies. In addition, they provided psychoactive frog venom that Braghen used, along with strong drink, to quiet the storm of pain and regret that plagued him every waking moment. It was enough to keep him going until he could find the glorious demise he still believed was out there waiting for him.

【求めていた死は得られなかったが、ブラッヘンはブルクローク族と友好関係を築き、彼らはブラッヘンの疲れ果てた失望をよそに、彼を救世主と神の代理人として見ていた。

BLOOD IN THE WATER

Shortly after Braghen Ragemonger's victory over the swamp horror, the great trollkin chieftain Madrak Ironhide, along with Admiral Thorga Boomhowler, arrived in Alchiere and came looking for Braghen, his reputation already well known to them. They sought him out in hopes he would join the Brineblood fleet and help establish peaceful relations with the Firetongue bullcroaks. Ragemonger still cared greatly about his people, and he was eager to aid the Southern Kriels. So, he negotiated a peaceful settlement between the Firetongue warriors and Madrak's people and pledged himself and his ships to Boomhowler's fleet.

【ブラッヘン・レイジモンガーがスワンプ・ホラーに勝利した直後、偉大なトロールキンの首領マドラック・アイアンハイドが提督ソーガ・ブームハウラーとともにアルキエールに到着し、ブラッヘンを探しに来た。

Braghen joined the Brinebloods partly out of a sense of duty to his people, but he had an ulterior motive. The Brineblood Marauders' pirating put them in frequent conflict with many powerful foes, including the naval might of the human nations of the Iron Kingdoms and, more recently, the Orgoth. Braghen felt certain that the glorious death he sought was out there on the high seas, and it would only be a matter of time before he was blasted to bits by a Cygnaran fusillade or fell to the savage blades of Orgoth sea raiders.

As it would happen, Braghen's chance to aid the Brinebloods and martyr himself in spectacular fashion came sooner than expected. When not marauding, the Brinebloods moored their fleet in Brackish Lake, a body of water some hundred miles inland and fed by a wide, deep river that connected to the Meredius. The lake was generally free of the large marine predators that prowled the Alchiere coastline, but Brineblood ships were often gore-covered after successful raids, and they left a bloody trail in the water that was eventually followed by a monster of terrible size and hunger. The whale-sized shark sank a number of the smaller Brineblood ships and happily devoured any trollkin or trolls foolish enough to confront it in the water.

When news of the giant marauding shark reached Braghen's encampment, he immediately gathered his deepborn dire trolls and made his way to Brackish Lake, bent on slaying the monster and, hopefully, dying in the process. Boomhowler forbade Braghen from attacking the beast, but, as he'd done with the kriel's elders and the gorgandur before, he ignored her, and instead dumped barrels of blood and fish innards into the lake. And then he waited for his opportunity.

The shark, attracted by the blood in the water, appeared soon after, and Braghen dove into the lake to battle the creature. He fought the colossal shark as best he could, using his deepborn dire trolls to distract the monster while he stabbed at it with his spear, but its thick skin was all but impenetrable. Braghen then hatched a desperate plan. The shark's leathery hide was proof against his attacks from the outside, but what about from the inside?

When next the shark charged Ragemonger, its vast jaws gaping wide, he did not attempt to evade it. Into the shark's gullet he went, slashing and stabbing at its soft innards all the way down. There, in the reeking belly of a giant fish, Braghen knew he would die, his debt to his destroyed kriel paid. Unfortunately, fate - as usual-had other plans.

In its death throes, the great shark beached itself, and in one final act, seemingly in utter defiance of Ragemonger's death wish, vomited up the trollkin warlock all but unscathed onto the sand. The majority of the Brinebloods had gathered to witness the battle, and they cheered as Braghen stood, covered in gore and bile, victorious against impossible odds yet again. Despite his best efforts, he had once more failed to end his life and had only added to a legend he neither wanted nor felt entirely worthy of.

Beyond saving Brineblood ships from further destruction, the battle had one other positive outcome: it forced Braghen to grudgingly accept that fate or perhaps Dhunia herself had further need of him on Caen. To honor the mysterious force keeping him alive, even against his will, he took one of the great shark's unborn pups, cutting it from its mother's carcass, and claimed it as his familiar. He named the pup Kharka and filed his own teeth into shark-like points to further honor the great beast that proved to him that he may yet have a reason to live.

THE LEGEND ENDURES

Braghen has made some measure of peace with the sins of his past, and though he is still wildly reckless in combat and would welcome an honorable death, the quest for a glorious end doesn't consume him as it once did. He now sees aiding the Brineblood Marauders as a kind of penance, one he plans to fulfill with the blood of any who would threaten his people. His mythical stature endures, however, and though he does not encourage it, the cult-like following that believes him incapable of defeat persists and makes up a large part of the crew of Ragemonger's ships.

Braghen's relations with the other Brineblood captains is a distant one; they regard him with a mixture of awe and wariness. When he does meet with the other captains, he often pushes for immediate and violent action of some kind. Recently, this aggression has been directed at the Orgoth, and Ragemonger is eager to engage the sea raiders wherever and whenever possible.

Boomhowler has tried-unsuccessfully - to learn more about Ragemonger's past, suspecting rightly that he harbors some terrible secret that drives his reckless behavior. For now, however, he is a welcome if unpredictable addition to the Brineblood fleet, and though some of his motives remain mysterious, none would question Braghen Ragemonger's devotion to his people.
