Throw out the baby with the bath water.(赤ん坊をおふろの水といっしょに捨てる)

ことわざ。意味は「大事なものを無用なものといっしょに捨てる」ことで、無用だとして廃棄されるものに重要なものが含まれていることを喚起するときに使われる。そのため、否定命令で使われることが多い。

フランス語では"Il ne faut pas jeter le bébé avec l'eau du bain."、ドイツ語では"das Kind mit dem Bade ausschütten"として使われる。

由来はフランシスコ会修道士トーマス・ムルナー(1475－1537)の言葉とされている。
