「ジョゼフ・コズマ　Joseph Kosma　が、1945年にローラン・プティ　Roland Petit　演出によるバレエ「ランデヴー　Le rendez-vous」のパ・ド・ドゥのために書いた曲が原型。詩人ジャック・プレヴェール　Jacques Prevert　がそれに詩をつけました。

プレヴェールが脚本を、コズマが音楽を担当した、マルセル・カルネ　Marcel Carne　監督の1946年の映画「夜の門　Les portes de la nuit」のなかで、当時新人歌手だったイヴ・モンタン　Yves Montand　が歌いましたが、映画共々ヒットしませんでした。しかし、続いてジュリエット・グレコ　Juliette Greco　が歌ったことで知られるようになりました。

最初の録音は1949年、コラ・ヴォケール　Cora Vaucaire。続いて同年にモンタンも録音しました。「枯葉」はモンタンだと思う方が多いでしょうが、彼は最初の節を歌わずに語ったり、2節目から歌い出したりします。コラのほうが忠実な歌い方をしていますし、最初に録音した歌手」

「1945年、ローラン・プティ・バレエ団のステージ「Rendez-vous」の伴奏音楽の一つとしてジョゼフ・コズマが作曲したメロディーが原型である。このステージからモチーフを得て翌1946年に製作されたマルセル・カルネ監督の映画「夜の門」（Les Portes de la Nuit ）で挿入歌として用いられることになり、映画の脚本にも携わったジャック・プレヴェールが新たに詞を付けた。なお、プレヴェールとコズマは、戦時中に製作されたカルネ監督の名作映画「天井桟敷の人々」にもそれぞれ脚本と音楽で携わっていた。歌自体は1947年に出版登録されている。

映画「夜の門」は戦後の世相を背景とした群像劇で、映画に出演した新人歌手イヴ・モンタンによって劇中で歌われたのが歌曲としての「枯葉」のオリジナルとなったが、このバージョンは映画共々ヒットしなかった。しかし、これに続いて当時人気があった知性派のシャンソン歌手ジュリエット・グレコが歌ったことで「枯葉」は世に認知されるようになり、1940年代末から1950年代にかけ広まって、シャンソン界のスタンダード曲となった。」

私のパソコンのウィンドウズメディアプレイヤーには、
2004年11月うつ病発症休職以降に
福岡市総合図書館から借りたCDによる、
フランク・シナトラ（1915.12.12-1998.5.14）の歌唱を
60曲ほど収納してありますけど、
"Autumn Leaves" はないので、
ユーチューブで初めて聴きました。

1970年代の初めにジャズを聴き始めた
1955年生まれの私にとっては、
ジャズ＝モダンジャズなので、
シナトラがジャズ歌手とは思えませんけど、
上記ウィキペディアによれば、
1939年：ハリー・ジェイムス楽団の歌手としてメジャー・デビュー。
1940年：トミー・ドーシー楽団に移籍。
若い頃はジャズ・ビッグバンドの人気歌手だったんですね。
