Hi, I'm going to tell you about when I wrote Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now by The Smiths on this very guitar.

こんにちは、今回はまさにこのギターでThe SmithsのHeaven Knows I'm Miserable Nowを書いた時の話をしようと思う。

I got this guitar on January 2nd 1984 because a few weeks earlier when The Smiths were going to sign to Sire Records, Seymour Stein, he took us out to dinner, wine and diners.

1984年1月2日にこのギターを手に入れたんだけど、その数週間前にThe SmithsがSire Recordsと契約しようとしていたとき、Seymour Steinが僕らをディナーに連れて行ってくれたんだ、ワインとダイナーでね。

We were getting stories out of him about all these different bands and he was telling me about when he took Brian Jones to get a guitar in New York.

彼からはいろいろなバンドの話を聞いていたんだけど、ブライアン・ジョーンズをニューヨークに連れて行ってギターを買ってもらったときのことを話してくれたんだ。

So I saw my opportunity right there and I said to him, well if you take me to get a guitar in New York, we'll sign to your record label.

そこで私はチャンスだと思い、「もしニューヨークでギターを買うために私を連れていってくれたら、あなたのレコード会社と契約しましょう」と言いました。

And in a moment of weakness, he took the bait and he said, sure I'll get you a guitar.

すると彼は弱気になったのか、「ギターを買ってあげるよ」と言ったんだ。

I said really, you'll get me a guitar if we sign?

私は、本当に、契約したらギターをくれるの？

So true to his word, although I had to wait around all day, we went over to 48th Street in New York, and he and I, as all the shops were closing, I thought, "I'm going to miss my chance," and I just saw in this store this guitar, and there was a light glowing around it—that's the one I want.

それで、彼の言葉どおり、一日中待たされたけど、ニューヨークの48番街に行って、彼と一緒に、店が全部閉まるときに、「このチャンスを逃すわけにはいかない」と思って、この店でギターを見たら、その周りに光が輝いていて、それが僕の欲しいギターだったんだ。

Anyway, he bought me the guitar and I was super happy about that of course and then I went straight back to the hotel and took it out of his case and the first thing I played on it was this.

とにかく、彼はそのギターを買ってくれて、もちろん超嬉しかったし、そのままホテルに帰ってケースから取り出して、最初に弾いたのがこれだった。

And that was literally what happened when I picked the guitar up.

ギターを手にしたとき、文字通りそう思ったんだ。

I was like, where the hell did this come from, so I better turn this into a song.

これは一体どこから来たんだろう、だからこれを歌にした方がいいんだ、という感じだった。

I wasn't sure whether it was Smith's song but it was definitely a song.

スミスの曲かどうかはわからなかったが、間違いなく曲になっていた。

Something I should say about this, I've not played this riff song for 25 years or something so if I screw it up then, you try playing it after 25 years, but they've got the next bit which is... I don't know.

この曲について言っておくと、僕はこのリフを25年以上弾いていないから、もし僕が失敗したら、25年後に弾いてみればいいんだ。よくわからないけど。

So, I had all that song worked out within an hour or so in New York and then the next thing I played on it was a riff that went...

だから、ニューヨークで1時間かそこらでその曲を全部完成させて、その次に弾いたのはリフだったんだ。

And I just was riffing on that really, maybe because it looked like a rock and roll guitar, which I imagined as a piano song and that turned into Girl Afraid and those two songs were always in my mind like a pair because I wrote them in the same day on this guitar.

そして、そのリフがロックンロール・ギターのように見えたからか、ピアノの曲として想像していたものが、Girl Afraidになったんだ。

And this is the guitar.

そしてこれがそのギター。

Noel tells me that this is the reason that he plays a Big Red 355, same as this because when he saw mine, as if largely in rock god in waiting, he always liked it.

ノエルがBig Red 355を弾く理由はこれと同じで、まるでロックゴッドが待っているかのように、僕のギターを見て、ずっと気に入っていたからだと言っている。

So, I think that set off his imagination, and this is the reason why.

だから、それが彼のイマジネーションを掻き立てたのだと思うし、これが理由だ。

And Bernard Buckley too, he had one of these as well.

バーナード・バックリーもこれを持ってたんだ。

So the three of us have all got these really cool 355s and that's the story of how the band has emerged upon that.
