I should ask you about lyrics, because one thing that's always been interesting to me is that there are people who sort of listen to your records, and lyrics aren't the point.

歌詞についてお聞きしたいのですが、私にとっていつも興味深いのは、あなたのレコードを聴いて、歌詞が重要でない人がいることです。

There are some people who sort of pore over them, and then there's everything in between.

歌詞をじっくり読む人もいれば、その中間の人もいる。

How essential are they to you as you're writing?

あなたにとって、歌詞はどの程度重要なものなのでしょうか？

Is that a main focus?

それは主な焦点なのでしょうか？

Yeah, I think it's very central.

ええ、とても中心的なものだと思います。

For me, writing lyrics is as primary as writing the music, as far as what you're trying to express and what you're trying to do with the songwriting.

私にとって、歌詞を書くことは、曲を書くことと同じくらい、何を表現しようとしているのか、曲作りで何をしようとしているのかということに関して、主要なものです。

They're not second thought or something that you have to do to fulfill the song.

歌詞は、曲を完成させるために必要なものであり、後回しにするべきではありません。

It's almost the most sensitive aspect of it, in a way, because those are the most sort of personalized kind of pieces in the song for whoever's singing.

ある意味で、それは曲の中でも最も感性的な部分であり、誰が歌っているかによって最も個人的なピースになります。

I actually really like more, when I listen to music, maybe the tone of someone's voice.

私は音楽を聴くとき、誰かの声のトーンの方が好きなんです。

I'm not really drawn in, always immediately, by the lyrics.

It's really the melody and the voice and kind of the gesture of what they're singing.

メロディーと声、そして歌っている人のジェスチャーが重要なんです。

I know writing lyrics is a certain responsibility, to write lyrics that have a certain profundity to your own experience, as opposed to just trying to do mad libs or something.

歌詞を書くということは、ある種の責任を伴うことだと思うんですが、ただマッドリブをしようとするのとは違って、自分自身の経験に対する深みを持った歌詞を書くこと。

Maybe you have to sing them over and over again, it helps to have something that means something to you.

何度も何度も歌わなければならないかもしれませんが、自分にとって何か意味のあるものを持つことは助けになります。

Do you feel like the way that you've written has changed a lot over the years?

この数年で、作曲の仕方は大きく変わったと感じますか？

Yeah, everything about what we do has changed a lot, I think.

ええ、私たちのやっていることのすべてが、大きく変わったと思います。

Although it's still the same, too.

でも、それは今でも同じです。

Yeah, in some ways it hasn't changed very much at all, in some ways it's changed a lot.

So at this point, I feel like a lot of people still get this little thrill when there's something that you've done related to a TV show, or get some sort of weird dissonance seeing the comp of your music at Starbucks, as if you're apart from that and there's something odd going on with that.

だから、今現在も、多くの人が、テレビ番組に関連したことをやっていると、ちょっとした興奮を覚えたり、スターバックスで自分の音楽のコンプを見て、何か変な不協和音を感じたり、まるで自分がそれとは別のところにいて、何か奇妙なことが起きているような気がする。

Do you feel like you're still infiltrating any kind of mainstream at this point, or are you comfortable with where you sit?

今現在もメインストリームに入り込んでいると感じますか？それとも、自分の居場所に満足していますか？

It's more like the mainstream's infiltrating us.

どちらかというと、メインストリームが私たちに入り込んでいるような感じですね。

That's probably true.

それはそうかもしれませんね。

I mean, you know, we've been around so long, and it's not like, you know, usually if it's for a TV show or something, I mean, most people will go after some hot new band or something, so if they actually really want us, it's like they've had to dig or something.

というのも、僕たちは長い間活動してきたし、テレビ番組とかであれば、ほとんどの人が注目の新人バンドを追いかけるから、本当に僕たちが欲しいなら、掘り下げたりしなければならないような感じなんだ。

Yeah, I mean, there doesn't seem to be this sense that people want to smuggle you into something larger sometimes.

そうですね、何か大きなものに紛れ込ませようという意識はあまりないような気がします。

It's usually unsuccessful.

たいてい失敗するんだけどね。

I mean, you know, the Starbucks thing is a case in point because people make such a big stink about us doing a record with Starbucks, and then when a CD finally came out, it's probably the most obscure, hard-to-find, rare recording we've ever released.

スターバックスの件はその典型で、僕らがスターバックスとレコードを出したと大騒ぎして、いざCDが発売されると、おそらく今までリリースした中で最も無名で入手困難なレア音源になっているんだ。

I've never seen it in a store.

お店で見たことがないんです。

You can't find it anywhere.

どこを探してもないんです。

I've never even met anyone who's seen it in a store.

店頭で見たことがある人に会ったこともない。

Not only that, I mean, I go into Starbucks, but I've never met anyone who's seen it in a store.

そればかりか、スターバックスに入っても、店頭で見た人に会ったことがないんです。

It was a selling out.

売り切れ続出でした。

They hardly gave us any, they didn't send any out to anyone.

ほとんど配られなかったし、誰にも配られなかった。

We're questioning whether they actually made it or not.

本当に作ったのかどうか、疑問が残る。

We've only heard about it.

話だけは聞いていたんですけどね。

They were worried about our cred, so they didn't make too many of them.

僕らの信用を気にして、あまり作らなかったんでしょうね。

Usually if we're on TV or something, and if we do anything, if we do any kind of noise music on TV, they always turn it down in the mix anyway, I noticed.

普通、僕らがテレビに出たりして、何か、テレビでノイズ・ミュージックをやると、とにかくいつもミックスで下げてしまうんだ、僕は気づいた。

We were just on the Jules Holland show in England, and everybody had to sort of play a little piece of this one song that was going around, so it was Taj Mahal, Lily Allen, Depeche Mode, us, and this other group.

イギリスのJules Hollandの番組に出演したとき、ある曲の一部を演奏することになったんだけど、その曲はTaj Mahal、Lily Allen、Depeche Mode、僕ら、そしてもう一組のグループだった。

I didn't see that part.

私はその部分を見ませんでした。

Everybody kind of jammed along with it, and then when it came to us, we decided just to turn on all of our pedals and boxes and just play extreme noise terror, and so when it came to us, when you actually saw the broadcast, it's just like, it's gone.

みんなで楽しんでいたんですが、私たちの出番になった時には、ペダルやボックスを全てフル稼働させて、激しいノイズを演奏することに決めました。そのため、私たちの出番を実際に見たときには、何が起きたかわからないくらいに一瞬で終わってしまいました。

I mean, the people who were in control kind of controlled it.

つまり、コントロールしていた人たちが、それをコントロールしていたようなものなんです。
