Well, it's been a little while since I've made an AI news breakdown video.

さて、ちょっと久しぶりにAIニュースのブレイクダウンビデオを作りました。

In this one, I'm going to walk through all the stuff that's happened in the last few days.

今回は、ここ数日で起こった様々な出来事を紹介します。

Let's start by talking about the biggest news that's happening in the AI world as of the date that I'm making this video, May 1st, 2023.

まず、このビデオを作成している2023年5月1日現在、AIの世界で起きている最大のニュースについてお話ししましょう。

Today, Jeffrey Hinton, who many people refer to as the godfather of AI and someone who won the Nobel prize of computing, are actually developing a lot of the technology that we use today in AI.

今日、AIの教父として多くの人々に言及されているジェフリー・ヒントン氏は、コンピュータのノーベル賞を受賞し、現在私たちがAIで使用している多くの技術を実際に開発しています。

Now, if you're curious about what the Nobel prize of computing even means, it means he won the AM Turing award.

Google actually acquired Hinton's research company back in March of 2013.

And Hinton has been part of Google ever since for the past decade.

Well, today, May 1st, the big news is that Hinton has actually stepped away from Google to focus on speaking out about the risks of AI.

Now he did an interview with the New York Times.

The interview sort of made it sound like Hinton was stepping away because he wanted to talk crap about his former employee over at Google.

But in his own words, he said, actually, I left so that I could talk about the dangers of AI without considering how this impacts Google.

Google has acted very responsibly.

So he has no bad words to say about Google, but his worries really revolve around the pace at which this AI stuff is really picking up.

He thought that Google was doing a really good job at holding back at releasing a lot of this AI technology up until Microsoft and OpenAI started putting things into Bing chat, and this sort of AI war began to escalate, forcing Google to escalate the release of a lot of their technology.

Now he has concerns over things like deep fakes, the spread of misinformation and how it's negatively going to impact the job market and people's careers in the future.

In his interview, he said the idea of this stuff could actually get smarter than people.

A few people believed that.

But most people thought it was way off and I thought it was way off.

So the idea that one of the people that essentially invented the technology that we're seeing used by Meta and Google and OpenAI and Microsoft and all of these companies is now worried about the pace at which this technology is picking up speed should raise some eyebrows.

Now in completely unrelated news, the company Palantir introduced an artificial intelligence platform for defense.

They released this demo video, showing how it can take into account a whole bunch of information from a battlefield: where the enemies are, how long it's going to take for various vehicles to get to an enemy, how many weapons any one military unit has.

It takes all of this data and suggests multiple courses of action on the battlefield, and then sends them to a commander for a commander to make a decision about which of those actions to take.

You can see in this screenshot of their demo video, the captain was given three potential courses of action: target with air assist, target with long range artillery, target with tactical team.

With the time required for each, the assets needed as well as the weapons needed, distance to target, and more information.

You can see over on the map, it's got a breakdown of the landscape and where the various assets are located on the battlefield.

I'm honest, it does freak me out a little bit.

Also in totally unrelated news, lawmakers proposed banning AI from single-handedly launching nuclear weapons.

No autonomous system without meaningful human oversight can launch a nuclear weapon or select or engage targets with the intention of launching one.

Any decision to launch a nuclear weapon should not be made by artificial intelligence.

Now don't get me wrong.

I love all of this AI stuff.

I love the AI tools.

I love the creative elements and it's been able to open up new pathways of creativity for people that maybe didn't have the skills or weren't capable of creating in the ways that they can create now.

I love all of those elements of it, but somebody that was leading the charge in bringing this AI technology to the world is now backtracking and saying, this is something we should all start to be a little bit concerned about.

The fact that companies are starting to map out their plans for the militarization of this technology, the fact that we even need to have conversations about whether or not AI should be allowed to launch nuclear weapons.

That stuff starts to get a little bit scary.

The deeper I go down the rabbit hole and learn about the technology underneath it, I think the bigger my tin foil hat starts to get as well.

I don't want to go all doom and gloom with this video, so I'm going to dive into all of the other fun stuff that's happening in AI right now.

Also recently, Google's DeepMind released this video of two autonomous robots playing soccer with each other.

The robots are capable of trying to score goals.

They're capable of if they fall down quickly, getting back up.

And they're also capable of learning.

The more they actually play soccer against each other, the better they actually get at it.

And here's a video showing the ability for these little robots to get back up quickly.

Now I wouldn't bully them too much because we just got done talking about how they're learning to launch missiles and how we need to ban them from launching nuclear weapons.

I mean, maybe we should be a little bit nicer, but this does demonstrate their ability to quickly get back to their feet and run around again.

If you want to look into it more, we all remember the metaverse that Mark Zuckerberg had planned for us, the one that gives us amazing graphics like this with floating torsos with heads on them and no legs and super cartoony-looking conference rooms that nobody can take seriously.

Well, it seems that Mr. Zuckerberg and meta have upgraded their game a little bit, and maybe we should start to change our expectations about what the metaverse might actually be now.

This is a video that Mark Zuckerberg released that is actually super realistic.

You can see the lighting change on him as it moves around the shadows on his face change.

It's starting to look ultra realistic, and I think this is closer to the metaverse that we all want.

Now I want to get into some stuff that you can actually play with right now today.

So recently Microsoft opened up their Microsoft designer tool and they've made it available for everybody now.

Now this tool is similar to something like a Canva, but with some additional functionality built in.

And if you head over to designer.microsoft.com, you can get in and play around with the preview version of it right now.

To start, you can create your image by just typing a prompt.

So let's say I want an Instagram image to represent that AI technology is moving super fast.

And let's just see what it generates for us.

Ultra quickly, we have a whole bunch of images that it generated.

Some of these are even little video clips.

If I preview them, AI technology moving fast, keep up with the pace or a human shaking the hand of a, you know, a vector hand here.

Now these images appear to be stock photos and not AI generated photos, but let's go ahead and pick an image here and click customized design.

You can see now we have a sort of Canva style editor here where we can choose a different template.

You could use some of the visuals that they have built in here with various stock photos and stock graphics and stock video that you can use, or you can generate your own images.

There's a brand kit here where you can change the color scheme.

But again, if you've used something like Canva before, this will feel very familiar to you and you can currently play around with it for free.

Also within the last few days, ElevenLabs introduced multilingual V1, which is a new speech synthesis model that allows you to create text in other languages.

Now it doesn't actually do the translation for you, but before everything was kind of in like a American accent.

Here's a tool that has been open sourced and made available called Espanol Love.

And it's basically a real time translation tool here.

It's using your OpenAI API key.

And it's also using the ElevenLabs API that we were just looking at so that you can in real time speak out something in English and then it will translate it.

And then using your own voice, speak it back out in Spanish.

I'm not going to argue that this type of thing hasn't already been around for a while.

But now anybody can make this sort of app themselves with open source technology that's available and tools like ElevenLabs.

So we've obviously heard some better text to speech generators out there.

Now, it also supposedly can recognize an image and generate sound from that image.

But if I upload an image like, for instance, this image of lightning striking here and then tell it to generate an audio of this uploaded image, I get something that sounds like this.

I don't know about you, but I don't think that really sounds like lightning or thunder.
