Hello, my name is Byron Ralston, and we're here in the studio with Sonic Youth.

I'm going to be talking to them about their recording deals, and their touring, and the work they've been doing with Lydia Lynch, and their new drummer.

And I'd like to introduce you to Thurston, to Lee, and I'm sorry, Kim.

So what's the latest, Thurston, what have you been up to?

Well, we just came back from a midwestern tour that we did that was fairly successful.

It's pretty gratifying in a way.

It wasn't as good as, we went down south earlier, which we really enjoyed, which was really good.

以前、南部に行った時は本当に楽しかったし、とても良かったんだけど、それよりは良くなかった。

But as far as that's concerned, we're not doing anything right now except for getting ready to record a second album.

でも、それに関しては、セカンド・アルバムのレコーディングの準備をする以外、今は何もしていないんだ。

And that's like waiting in the wings.

そして、それは待機しているようなものなんだ。

You'll see a video from our midwestern tour when we were in Minneapolis, I think they're going to show a cut off that.

So you had a crew with you when you were touring, or just basically when you got to the town you set things up for it?

ツアーにはクルーが同行したの？それとも、基本的にはその町に着いてから準備したの？

No, well what happened actually, a friend of mine happened to be there teaching in Minneapolis, Tony Osler.

いや、実は、たまたま俺の友人がミネアポリスで教えていたトニー・オスラーという人がいてね。

And he just brought a student down and a camera and just set it up.

彼は、生徒とカメラを持って来て、セットアップしてくれたんだ。

So it wasn't really, there was no crew really, it was just very simple.

だから、クルーもいないし、とてもシンプルなものだった。

So are you satisfied with it?

それで満足しているの？

Do you see yourselves as working more in that framework?

今後、そのような枠組みで仕事をしていくことになるのだろうか？

Or concentrating more on getting gigs around the city or touring?

それとも、街中でライブをしたり、ツアーに参加することに集中しますか？

How do you see your future as far as a band?

バンドとしての将来はどう考えていますか？

We're really sort of interested now in sort of professionalizing ourselves.

俺たちは今、自分たちをプロフェッショナルにすることにとても興味があるんだ。

We've been around for a couple of years and we're just working now on getting some kind of business management together.

結成して数年経ちますが、今はビジネス・マネージメントに取り組んでいるところです。

Sounds so strange.

とても不思議な感じだね。

Yeah, it's pretty strange, because we've always been pretty much do-it-yourself, and we set up the tours totally ourselves, we use no agency whatsoever.

そうですね、俺たちはいつもDIYで、ツアーの準備も自分たちでやっていて、代理店も一切使っていませんから、とても不思議な感じだよ。

So how do you see the future of New York bands?

では、ニューヨークのバンドの将来をどのように見ていますか？

Do you see it as very lucrative or basically kind of like a struggle?

とても儲かると思いますか、それとも基本的に闘争のようなものだろうか？

Or, do you have to work on a lot of different medias in order to get your point across?

それとも、自分の言いたいことを伝えるために、いろいろなメディアで活動する必要があるのだろうか？

Sounds like bands have a harder time here.

ここでは、バンドはもっと大変なようだね。

It's hard to build or maintain any kind of momentum, even if you can get one record out, it's hard to put another record out.

勢いをつけるのも維持するのも難しいし、たとえ1枚レコードを出すことができても、次のレコードを出すのは難しいんだ。

Okay, so we're going to have to wrap this up, so is there anything you'd like to say as an afterthought, or anything about where you're going to be playing in the future?

わかりました、そろそろ終わらせる必要がありますね。もし何か追加で言いたいことがあったり、将来的にどこで演奏する予定があったりする場合は、今のうちに言っていただけますか？

We'll be playing around the city in February quite a bit.

2月は結構都内を中心に演奏する予定です。

I mean, we've got it pretty together now, we have a new drummer, this fellow Jim Sklavunos, who's actually like a good, new, healthy ingredient to the band.

今はバンドの調子がかなり良いんだ。新しいドラマー、ジム・スクラヴノスが加入して、実際にバンドにとって良い影響を与えてくれているよ。新しい健康的な要素が加わった感じがしているんだ。

Sounds great.

いい音だ。

Okay.
