C2 Proficiency 合格体験記のご紹介!

Name: Kei Wada様(29歳)職業:英語教師

Overview

I was delighted to successfully complete the Cambridge English CPE (C2 Proficiency), reputedly the most challenging examination across all categories of English assessments. My primary motivation for undertaking this exam was to bolster my self-confidence in English acquisition and to augment the English proficiency among the local people of Fukuoka Prefecture. It is my firm conviction that achieving the Cambridge English C2 Proficiency certificate, despite having never traveled abroad, serves as a potent catalyst for fellow English learners, kindling a more fervent zeal to enhance their linguistic capabilities. Consequently, I am eager to share the strategies I employed and the obstacles I surmounted in my journey to conquer the Cambridge English CPE.

Early Challenges

Having passed the United Nations English Proficiency Test Special A level(国連英検特A級), the pinnacle of English assessments in Japan, three years prior, I resolved to target the Cambridge English CPE as a culminating milestone in my English learning journey. However, the scarcity of resources concerning the Cambridge English CPE in Japan presented formidable challenges, especially with complex grammatical structures and idiomatic expressions that differd significantly from the straightforward English encountered in other tests like TOEIC, IELTS, and Eiken. Moreover, mastering pronunciation, particularly the nuances of British accents and dialects, proved especially daunting.

Stepping Up Efforts and Methods of Study

Recognizing the disparity between my current proficiency and that required for the CPE, I committed to an even more stringent study schedule. I regularly engaged with English texts, including newspapers, books, and The Economist, and listened to BBC News and BBC Learning English daily. To acclimate to the variety of British accents, I repeatedly analyzed the delivery of BBC news narrators using transcripts, which substantially enhanced my comprehension of these accents. A thorough understanding of grammar and collocation was indispensable for the Use of English section, prompting me to diligently explore vocabulary using English-only dictionaries. The textbook "Objective Proficiency" proved instrumental in navigating the CPE, equipping me with the skills to adeptly tackle exercises in the Cambridge reference materials.

Overcoming Plateaus

My progress was not without its ebbs and flows. There were periods where advancement seemed to stagnate, particularly with intricate grammatical nuances. Moreover, I endured psychological strains from anonymous defamations on social media, which dampened my motivation and made the objectives appear insurmountable. Nevertheless, with the encouragement of friends and peers, I overcame these standstills by establishing incremental, attainable goals that progressively fortified my skills and confidence.

The Test Day

On the examination day, anxiety was palpable, yet I was thoroughly prepared. The test challenged my capabilities to meticulously analyze English, construct coherent essays, articulate thoughts logically, and comprehend English at an almost native level. The extensive preparation was vindicated as I proficiently navigated the reading comprehension, essay writing, listening tests, and the demanding speaking segment.

Success and Beyond

A month later, I was elated to learn I had passed, with my proficiency in all five skills exceeding the CEFR C2 level. The happiness and relief were profound, and my sustained efforts were rewarded. Beyond the immediate success, the exam endowed me with a deep mastery of English, paving the way for international career opportunities and further education. As an English educator, I am committed to leveraging my invaluable experiences to enhance my students’ English proficiency.
My appetite for English learning remains undiminished. My next target is achieving a score of 8.5 on the IELTS, as I continue to elevate my linguistic prowess.
