2022年、シカゴ・ソウルの重鎮アレンジャー、故チャールズ・ステップニーのデモ・テープが発見され、『ステップ・オン・ステップ』としてCD化された。そのCD発売に連携して約35分のドキュメンタリー映像『チャールズ・ステップニー～アウト・オブ・ザ・シャドーズ』が公開された。これは約9分前後の映像が2022年8月から2023年2月まで4回にわたって公開されたもの。

その映像に日本語字幕をつけたものを上映し、その後、冨田ラボ、原雅明のトークショーを行うイヴェントが企画され、2023年11月19日（日）18時半から青山の「バールーム(BAROOM)」で行われる。同店で行われている「アナログ・マーケット」というイヴェントの一環。

Episode One follows Stepney into his basement studio on the South Side Chicago, where he workshopped, recorded, and created much of the music that would become gold & platinum selling hits, and even more music that would never see the light of day. It features interviews and testimonies from members of Earth, Wind & Fire, Terry Callier, the Dells, and Stepney’s daughters Eibur, Charlene, and Chanté (aka the Stepney Sisters).

Where Episode One shed light on Stepney at work in his basement studio on the Southside Chicago, Stepney’s daughters Eibur, Charlene, and Chanté (aka The Stepney Sisters) are the focus of Episode Two, “The Next Plane.” In the piece, Ashby highlights the circumstances around Stepney’s death, as recounted from historical, communal, and familial perspectives, and just some of the subsequent work The Stepney Sisters have been doing over several decades to archive, cherish, and celebrate their father’s legacy.

チャールズ・ステップニーについて
 
チャールズ・ステップニーは1931年3月26日イリノイ州シカゴ生まれ。ジャズ・ピアノ奏者、ヴァイブラホン、その他の楽器も演奏できる。シカゴのブルーズ、R&Bレーベル、チェス・レコーズのレナード・チェスらと知己を得て、同レーベルで多くの作品のレコーディングに参加。アレンジ、演奏、プロデュースなどをてがけた。この頃てがけたのは、デルズ、ロータリー・コネクション（リード・シンガーにミニー・リパートン）、ラムゼイ・ルイスなど。オーケストラのアレンジ譜を書けることから、アレンジャーとして引っ張りだことなった。レーベル・メイトのラムゼイ・ルイス、そのドラマー、モーリス・ホワイトらとも親しくなり、モーリスがラムゼイ・トリオを脱退した後に結成するアース・ウィンド＆ファイアーのアレンジを担当。モーリス・ホワイトの文字通り「右腕」となっていく。しかし、そのアースの『スピリット』制作途中、45歳で急死。同アルバムはチャールズに捧げられた。
 
チャールズのてがけるアーティストは、マディー・ウォーターズ、ハウリン・ウルフなどのブルーズ・アーティストから、テリー・カリアーなどのフォーク・R&B、ミニー・リパートンなどのジャズ・ソウル的なアーティストとひじょうに広かった。
 
1976年5月17日、前日まで仕事をしていたが、心臓発作で急死。45歳だった。チャールズの死後は、妻ルビー、3人の娘イーバー、シャーリーン、シャンテがチャールズの作品の管理をしている。
