In the community, the birth of a child is very important because:
-it ensured continuity in the family line .
-there parents are sure for receive protection from the child .
-children especially girls are source of wealth in the family.
-they provide labour force .
- they seal a marriage.
Rules and regulations followed by expectant mother.
Not to eat certain foods with much protein (🥴weird right ? )
To abstain from sex .
To avoid dangerous heavy duties.
Not to use sharp tools .
To offer sacrifices to appease ancestors.
To wear protective charms against evil spirits .
Obtain good relations with neighbors and relative .
Avoid contact with such people who believed to be evil.
*During delivery midwives take change to ensure the process is safe after delivery certain rituals re formed to mark the birth of a child such as:
-the umbilical cord is cut .
-the placenta is carefully disposed to guard it against evil and ensure continued fertility.
-sacrifices and prayers of thanks giving to God and ancestors.
-medicinal herbs / water are administered to the baby to protect from evil eyes .
- both mother and child are secluded for some time :- a) protect them from evil eyes .
b) help them recover .
c) train the mother on skill of nursing.
d) give time for preparation for other rituals.
-both mother and child are shaved to mark the end of seclusion. It symbolized new life and the mother and the baby are given protective charms to wear .
-feasts /celebrations were held to welcome the baby into their community to congratulate the parents and expressed appreciation for god's blessing.
- gifts are given to congratulate the parents and welcome the baby.
-the child is given a name to give a name to give him /her an identity.
