In 1863 over three days from July 1 to July 3 the bloodiest battle of the Civil War, the Battle of Gettysburg, took place in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

The battle was significant because it was a turning point.
It was the first major victory by the Union, the United States against the Southern is called rebellion forces.

Also, importantly, it is noted for the brief but very influential speech that U.S. president Abraham Lincoln gave four months later to honor the soldiers who fought at the battle.

In the speech, called the Gettysburg Address, Lincoln was able to effectively state the purpose of the United States. He was able to make it clear that the US　was a country created from liberty with the belief that all people are equal.
